SAFETY DEVICE FOR JEWELRY.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,358, dated October 9, 1894.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JULIUS BONNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, 1n the county and State of New York, have luvented new and useful Improvements in Looks for Ear-Wires, Scarf-Pins, and Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a simple and effective device by means of which an ear ring,

a scarf pin, a lace pin or another article of a similar nature can be secured in the required positlon sothat it cannot become detached either by accident or by design.

The peculiar and novel construction of my lock is pointed out in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Flgure 1 is a side elevation of an ear wire provlded with my lock, the lock being shown 1n section along the line 00 a: Fig. 2. In the drawings the letter A designates the shank of the ear wire or pin to which is secured the setting Bin any desirable manner. Said shank is provided with recesses 10 which may extend clear around or only partially round the shank.

C is the lock which I have constructed for the purpose of retaining the pin in the required position. This lock consists of a plate 11 which is provided so that it can be readily applied to the shank A and easily moved thereon into the required when the position. On this socket plate 11 is movably secured a catch 14. so that when the socket plate has been moved into the required position on the shank A, said catch can be brought into engagement with one or more of the recesses 10 in the shank.

' In the drawings the catch 1418111 the form which form portions of concentric circles described from the center of the pivot 15 so that catch is moved in a plane parallel with a socket or hole 12 with the surface of the plate 11 to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the slot 16 engages one of the recesses 10 in the shank A so as to lock the socket plate in the required position, and when thecatchis moved to the position shown in Fig. 3, the socket plate 11 is released so that it can freely move in or out on the shank A. Furthermore the recesses 10 in the shank A are made circular and the ridges between the adjoining recesses have sharp edges and the edges of the slot 16 are also chamfered 011 to form sharp edges (see Figs. 1 and 4.) so that when the catch "14 is turned to its locking position, the edges of its slot will readily find their way into one of the recesses 10. From the socket plate 11 extends a finger piece 17 and a similar finger piece 18 extends from the catch 14. By means of these finger pieces the catch 14. can be readily thrown in or out of engagement with the recesses 10 in the shank A and when my lock is applied to an ear wire or to a lace pin which in their normal use occupy a horizontal or approximately horizontal position, the

What I claim as new, and desire to secure a by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination with a shank A having recesses 10, of a plate 11 having a socket 12 fitting and adjustable along the length of the shank, and a catch carried by the socketed plate and movable thereupon in aplane parallel with the surface of the said socketed plate to engage and disengage the recessesin the shank, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a shank A having recesses 10, of a plate 11 having a socket 12 loosely fitting and adjustable along the length of the shank, and a catch-plate let pivoted to the socketed plate and oscillating thereupon in a plane parallel with the surface of said socketed plate to engage and disengage the recesses 10, of a plate 11 loosely fitting and adjustable along the length of the shank, and a catch-plate pivoted to the socketed plate 5 of a disk or plate secured to the socket plate recesses in the shank, substantially as de- 5 11 by means of a pivot 15 and in the catch scribed. 1 is formed a segmental slot 16, the edges of 3.
