Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL W. TILLMANNS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to an improved knife, and I declare that the following is a full, clear, concise and exact description thereof, suiiicient to enable one skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout.
The invention consists chiefly in an improved means for locking the blade of a knife in open and also in closed position, means for manipulating the said locking means and means whereby to prevent the accidental operation of said manipulating means and the consequent releasing of the blade.
The drawing shows but a single blade, but it will be understood that the parts shown and described may be duplicated ac cording to the number of blades in the knife.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side view of a knife from which one of the handle pieces has been removed to show the improved device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of such device. Fig. 3 is an edge view of part of a knife, a portion of one of the handles being cut away. Fig. 4 is a full view look ing at the edge of the knife with the lock manipulating member shown in position to release the blade. Fig. 5 is a side view showing the blade and the spring which throws the blade out of the case. Fig. 6 is an enlarged view of a detail. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail on line 77 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A, A represent the handles, B, B, the linings and C the back which are assembled and secured as is well known. The blade D is pivotally mounted in the said parts which make the case, as it may be called, at (Z. A spring E is secured in the case with its free end bearing against the shank of the blade, as seen in Fig. 5, the force of the spring being such as to swing the blade into open posi i n when it is released.
Secured to the lining, as by pin 1, is spring-plate 2 provided at the free end with stud 3 which lies in recess 4 in the blade when closed and in recess 5 when open. This plate lies in recess 7 in the handle and has means including a lever which, in the present instance, is mounted on two posts 8 and 9 on spring plate 2 and which project through the handle which is apertured for that purpose. Between these posts is pivotally mounted, as by pin 10, the lever 11 which has a portion of its shank plane, as at 12, for the bearing thereon of a second spring 14 mounted on the plate 2, the force of which holds the lever normally in the position shown by full lines in Fig. 3. The lever also has a shoulder 15 which bears on the handle A when the lever is swung into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3.
It will be seen that spring-plate 2 lies close against the lining so that the stud 3 is in looking engagement with the blade and that the plate must be lifted before the blade is free. This feature adds to the safety of the knife when carried in the pocket as the blade cannot be released by any accidental pressure as is the case with some constructions, since the lever, in inoperative position, lies close to the handle; full lines Fig. 3.
The lever 11 when swung back, with the shoulder 15 hearing on the handle, and pressed down lifts the plate 2 and unlocks the blade. The improvement goes further, however, than to provide a lock which must be liftedout and means for accomplishing that by the lever. Were the latter left free to swing it might be accidentally pressed and the blade unlocked. By means of spring 1% the lever is held closely against the handle so that it cannot operate to unlock the blade except by handling and prevents the blade being unlocked except by design.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a knife, the combination with a blade recessed to receive locking means h0lding the blade in open and in closed position, such locking means, a swinging lever operatively connected with the locking means in one position bearing on the handle to lift said locking means out of locking position and means locking said lever in reverse position.
2. In a knife, the combination with the handle and blade, of a bladelock, a lever pivotally mounted on said lock and having a shoulder to bear on the handle and lift the lock out of engagement in one position 1 the lever and a means locking said lever in its reverse position to lie against the handle.
8. In a knife, the combination with a handle, a blade and a spring adapted to swing the blade out of the handle, and means whereby to lock the blade in open and closed position, of means whereby to release said locking means and a spring member adapted to secure the releasing means close against the handle when the blade is in either locked position.
4. In a knife of the character described, the combination with means for locking the blade in open and closed position, of a lever adapted to manipulate such means, the said lever being swingable toward either end of the knife, in the open or closed position of the blade lying against the handle and in the other position forming a lever for the release of the blade-locking means.
5. In a knife, the combination of a blade, means engaging and locking the blade in open and in closed position, a swinging lever operatively connected with said means in one position of which lever it operates to release the said locking means, and a second locking means bearing on said lever and holding it in its inoperative position.
