STES PATENT OFFICE.
BLAL EJ OLAS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO IVIACIEJ MALACINA, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HAT-PIN-POINT PROTECTOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BLAZEJ OLAS, a subject of the Emperor of i-lustria-l-Iungary, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin- Point Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a hat pin point protector, and the object of my invention is to furnish a hat pin with a protecting device that will serve as a guard and a lock for retaining the hat pin within a hat and prevent a pedestrian from being injured when contacting with the pin.
I attain the above object by resorting to the use of a spring actuated drum that is located adjacent to the head of the pin, the drum having a tape or cord to which is attached a guard or protecting device, the spring actuated drum retaining the device in proximity to the pin, when not in use, thereby preventing the guard or look from becoming lost.
The invention will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein i Figure l is a side elevation of a hat pin provided with the guard and lock. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of a portion of the pin, showing the spring actuated drum in section, and Fig. 3 is a similar view oi a portion of the pin showing the guard or lock in section.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a hat pin having a head 2 and a pointed end 3.
Mounted upon the pin 1, adjacent the head 2 is a cylindrical casing fl having a central sleeve 5 to receive the pin 1, the sleeve 5 being soldered or otherwise secured to the pin. Connected to the sleeve 5 within the casing 4 is one end of a spiral band spring 6 and the opposite end of said spring is attached to the wall of a drum 7 loosely mounted within the casing 4 and inclosing Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 668,912.
the spring 6. Attached to the drum 7 and wound thereon is a tape or cord 8 having the free end thereof extending through a slot 9 in the casing 4:. The free end of the tape or cord 8 is suitably connected, as at 10 to a pin 11 carried by a cartridge-shaped shell 12 in which is mounted a piece of cork, rubber or other yieldable material 13. The piece of material 13 has the outer end thereof provided with an entrance opening l l adapted to receive the pointed end 3 ot' the pin 1. The tape 8 can be easily withdrawn from the casing 4: and the guard or look, comprising the elements 11 to 13 inclusive placed upon the pointed end of the pin, the tape 8 being of a suflicient length to pass around the crown of a hat or over the same. With the guard and lock in position the pointed end of the pin is protected and the pin can not become accidentally displaced. When the guard or look is removed from the pointed end of the pin it is carried against the casing 4 by the spring 6 retracting or winding the tape 8 upon the drum 7.
What I claim is 1. In combination a hat pin provided with a head, a spring actuated drum carried by said pin in proximity to said head, a flexible member connected to and normally wound upon said drum, and a guard for the pointed end of the pin connected to the free end of said member.
2. In. combination a hat pin having a head at one end and the opposite end pointed, a stationary casing fixed to said pin in proximity to said head, a spring controlled actuated drum mounted upon the pin and arranged within said casing, a flexible member normally wound upon said drum, and a guard for the pointed end of said pin connected to the outer end of said member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
