Be it known that I, LAFAYETTE IVEAVER, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Guards; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in devices for attaching a hat to the person by means of a cord or other flexible connection.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient device of this character which may be mounted in the hat so as not to annoy or inconvenience the wearer when it is not in use, and which may be readily adjusted so that it will effectively prevent the hat from being blown away.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described. and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a sectional view through a portion of a hat, showing my improved guard attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 22 in Fig. 1 and showing another form ot'attaching device upon the free end of the cord; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device, showing it mounted in a hat above its sweat band and attached to the latter by means of a clip; Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views similar to Fig. 3, showing other ways in which the device may be fastened in a hat; Fig. 6 is a sectional view through a portion of a hat, showing my improved guard attached to the hat between the body and the sweat band thereof. Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view through a modified form of the invention, in which. the tubular fastening is made of two adjustable telescoping parts; and Figs. 8 and 9 are detail views showing this adjustable tubular fastening.

Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes a portion of a hat of any description, 2 the usual sweat band in the hat, and 3 my improved h at guard. The latter comprises a body or casing 4 preferably of circular form and secured to the hat 1 by a concentric tubular rivet 5, which latter also serves as a ventilator for the hat. through which passes a cord, tape or similar flexible connection 6, by means of which the hat is attached to the person. This tape 6 has its inner end secured to and wound upon a spring-actuated winding drum 7 within the casing 4- and adapted to rotate Said drum is actuated in one direction to wind up the tape 6, by means of a coiled spring 8 disposed within the drum and having one end connected to the rivet 5 and its opposite end to the rim of the drum 8.

Any suitable attaching device may be provided upon the free end of the tape or cord 6. As shown in Fig. l, a cross bar or button 9 is attached thereto and adapted to be inserted in the butto'n hole in the lapel of a coat, or otherwise attached to the garment of the person who wears the hat. In Fig. 2 of the drawings, a loop 10 is shown upon the tape 6. This loop has a large opening 11 adapted to fit over a button, and a small opening 12 adapted to fit the neck of the button or the threads which attach it to the garment, said small opening 12 being in communication with the large one 11 through a contracted neck 13, so that when the button is inserted through the opening 11 and the ring or loop 12 is drawn upon, the neck or attaching threads of the buttonwill pass into the small opening 12 and be frictionally retained therein. If desired, the casing 4 may be further attached to the hat by forming or providing upon it a clip 14 of Y-form, as shown in Fig. 3. This clip is adapted to be inserted between the hat body 1 and the sweat band 2, and is formed with attaching tongues 15 adapted to be passed through the sweat band and bent inwardly, as will be readily understood. Instead of the clip 14 shown in Fig. 3, I may employ the clip 16 shown in Fig. 4. This clip is disposed upon the outside of the sweat band and has its ends bent inwardly and passed through the sweat band as shown. If desired, the casing 4 may be mounted between the sweat band and the hat body 1, as shown in Fig. 5, and the tape or cord 6 in this instance extends between the sweat band and the hat.

In Figs. 7, 8 and 9 of the drawings I have shown the casing 4 attached to the hat 1, by means of a tubular rivet consisting of two adjustable telescoping parts or sections 20, 21. The section 20 is passed through an opening in the hat and has its head 22 engaged with the outside of the hat. Its inner disposed end is slotted longitudinally and bent to form through the casing and projecting from one two resilient jaws 23, which are adapted to engage the seats 24 formed in the part 21 of the rivet, into which part they telescope. The head of the part 21 is open to clear the said jaws. It will be seen that by means of this connection, the guard may be readily applied to a hat of any description.

The construction, operation and advantages of the invention will be readily under stood from the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be seen that whenever the tape 6 is released, the spring 8 will rotate the drum 7 to wind it upon the latter and in the casing 4, so that the latter and the attaching device upon the free end of the tape will not interfere in any way with the use of the hat. When it is desired to use the device, the tape 6 is pulled outwardly to unwind it from the drum 8, and the attaching device upon its free end is engaged with the button-hole or button upon the coat or other garment of the user. When the hat is placed upon the head, the pressure of the hat against the head will hold the tape between the head and the sweat band, so that the spring 8 will be prevented from acting upon the tape and its lower portion will hang loose, as will be readily understood.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettors-Patent is 1, A hat guard comprising a casing having an opening therein, a tubular rivet extending side thereof to secure the same to a hat, a revoluble drum in the casing, a cord attached to said drum and extending through the opening in the casing, and a coiled spring in said drum having one end attached thereto and the other end attached to the tubular rivet.

2. A hat guard comprising a casing-having an opening, a tubular rivet extended through said casing and projecting beyond opposite sides thereof, one of said projecting ends being extended and secured to one side of a hat, a clip also attached to the hat and secured to the rivet, a revoluble drum in the casing, a coiled spring in said drum having one end attached thereto and the other end attached to the tubular rivet, and a cord attached to said drum and extending through the opening in the casing.

3. A hat guard comprising a casing having an opening, a tubular rivet extended through opposite sides of the casing to secure the same to a hat, said tubular rivet comprising telescopically related members, one bifurcated to form spring jaws having projections and the other formed with seats to receive said projections to detachably secure said members together and said casing to said hat, a revoluble drum in the casing, a coiled spring in said drum having one end attached thereto and the other end attached to said rivet, and a cord attached to said drum and extending through the opening in the casing.
