SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,148, dated October 28, 1902.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANCIS H. NASH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tape-Measures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to tape-measures; and it has for its object to provide a device of this nature which will be particularly adapted for use by tailors and seamstresses, the object of the invention being to provide a construction by means of which the measure may be attached to the wrist of the user in position for operation at any time and under all conditions. 7

A further object of the invention is to provide such aconstruction as will hold the measure in proper position at all times, so that tangling of the tape will be prevented.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be understood from the following description.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a top plan View showing the tape-measure and its attaching means ready to be secured to the wrist of the user. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the measure with the attaching-strap in attaching position, a portion of the casing member and of the strap being in section to show the pivotal mounting of the casing.

Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a tape-measure, including a substantially cylindrical casing 5, centrally of which is a spring-drum 6, to which is attached one end of the tape 7, which is drawn through an opening 8in the side of the casing in the usual manner for use. Centrally of the spring-drum is a tube 9,which is rigidly connected to the upper and lower walls of the casing, and through this tube is passed a pivot 10, the lower end of which is engaged with a strap 11, while at its upper end is a head which has frictional contact with the upper end of the casing.

The portion of the strap 11 to which the casing is attached is broadened, as shown, andat opposite sides of the broadened portion are the reduced ends 12 and 13, the end 12' having a buckle 14, which receives the end 13, the latter having tongue-receiving perforations 15 of usual arrangement.

In practice the strap is passed around the wrist of the user, and the end 13 is engaged with the buckle 14 to hold the strap and therewith the casing in place. When the tapenieasure is to be used, the end of the tape is grasped and the tape'is drawn from the easing in the usual manner, the pivotal mounting of the casing permitting it to rotate to a position where the tape may be readily withdrawn without tangling. When the tape is to be returned to the casing, it is released and the spring-drum winds it up in the usual manner.

It will be understood that in practice modifications of the specific construction shown may be made and that anysuitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What is claimed is 1. A tape-measure comprising a casing having a tube passed axially therethrough, a spring-drum mounted upon the tube and having a tape attached thereto and passed outwardly from the casing, an attaching-strap having securing means and a pivot passed loosely through the tube and engaged at its lower end with the strap, the upper end of the pivot having a head to prevent removal of the tube from the pivot.

2. A tape-measure comprising a casing having a tape mounted therein and a springdrum on which the tape is wound, said tape being passed outwardly through the side of the casing, and a strap comprising a broadened portion having narrowed extensions, one of which is provided with a buckle, said casing being rotatably mounted upon the broadened portion of the strap.
