To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AN'rrroN Bnnrnnnmen, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holmes, in the county of Grand Forks and State of North Dakota, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin Guards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to protection de vices and has particular reference to an improved form of hat pin point protector.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, efiicient in its purpose and which may be readily applied or disengaged from the hat pin point.
Another object is to so construct the working parts of the device as to permit of the same being inclosed in a shield which may be made ornamental, thereby providing for the attractiveness of the article.
Another object of the invention isto provide an ornamental shield and to so arrange the working parts thereof as to permit of the operation of the device from the exterior of the shield.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the improved point protector showing the application of the same to a hat pin point. Fig. 2 is a detail prospective view of the clamping device. Fig. 3 is an end view of the shield partly broken away.
Referring to the drawings by numerals wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 designates an elongated strip of flat spring material which is bent intermediate its ends as at 2 to provide the arms 3 and +l-, the bending of the strip as at 2 serving to normally cause the arms 3 and l to spring away from each other due to the resiliency of the material from which the device is'constructed. Intermediate the bend 2 and the outer end of the arm i, the said arm is bent at substantially right angles to itself as at 5, is then extended inwardly a short distance, then bent back upon itself as at 6 to lie in spaced parallel relation with the arm i and is then again bent at right angles to itself as at T and brought into en? gagement with the inner face of the arm. Openings 8 of a size slightly larger than the point to which the device is to be applied are formed in the portions 5 and 7 for a purpose which will presently appear.
The termlnal end of the arm 3 is bent downwardly at substantially right angles to the arm as at 9 and this downwardly extending portion is provided with an elongated slot 10. In applying the device as described to a hat pin point, the arms 3 and 4 are grasped and forced together until the openings 8 are alined with the slot 10, it being understood that the arm 3 is of slightly greater length than the arm 4 in order that the extension 9 may pass freely over the outer face of the portion 5. The point of the pin is then inserted within the slot 10 and through the openings 8. The arms 3 and a are then released whereupon the spring action of the strip due to the bend 2 Wlll cause the lower edge of the slot 10 to frictionally engage with the point and hold the same in binding relation with the'openings 8, thus securely fastening the article upon the point of the pin.
In order to provide for the attractiveness of the article, I inclose the member 1 within a shield 10 which may be suitably ornamerited upon its exterior faces. However, in
order to provide for the operation of the device when arranged within a shield, I secure to one of the arms 3 or d, preferably the arm 3, afinger engaging member 11. This member is adapted to extend through an opening in one edge of the shield 10 so that by exerting a pressure thereon, the arm 3 may be operated to permit of the insertion of the point of the pin within the shield in the manner previously described, it being understood of course, that one end of the shield is provided with an opening arranged in alinement with the openings 8 when the clamping member is positioned within the shield so as to permit of the insertion of the pin therein.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is thought that the construction and op eration of the device will be clearly under stood and while I have herein shown and described one specific form of my invention, I do not wish to be limited thereto except for such limitations as the claims may impart.
I claim:
1 A hat pin point protector comprising 'olamp the end of the same within said casing, and a releasing member carried by said reslllent member and pro ecting through the a side of said casing.
2. A hat pin point protector comprising a casing having a small aperture in one end, a res'ilient member bent upon itself within said casing, one end of said resilient member being turned back and'provided with parallel spaced portions, said parallel spaced portions having small openings in alinement with the opening in the end of said casing, the remaining end of said resilient member being positioned between one of said par- I allel portions of the first-mentioned end and the adjacent apertured end of said casing, the second mentloned end of said resilient member being provided with an elongated slot adapted to register; with the apertures of the first-mentioned end and the aperture of said casing to; permit the entrance of a pointed member in sald apertures, an
end wall of said slot cooperating with the walls of said apertures to clamp the end of said pointed member in said casing, and means for releasing said pointed member.
3. An article of manufacture comprising a rectangular casing, a spring metal strip positioned in said casing and bent u on itself to form a central loop portion, the ends of said strip being curved in opposite directions, one end being extended and bent back upon itself to form a longitudinal portion, and right-angled portions provided with registering apertures, the remaining end of said strip having its free extremity bent at an angle and extended parallel with the anertured portions of the first-mentioned end, said extremity having an elongated slot adapted to register with said apertures, said casing having an opening in one end registering with said a ertures, said extremity being adapted to cover said opening when in normal position, and means carried by the second-mentioned end of said stri and projecting through said casing to move said second-mentioned end toward said firstmentioned end.
