Among the other aims and objects of the "present invention may be recited ltmprovision of a device of the character mentioned sing with the eye of a button 7 w on which is slidably engaged the with a view to compactness, and in which the number ofparts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the efliciency high.

Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus will be brought out more in detail in the descrip tion to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention, should be considered in connection with the accompanying draw- 1 ings forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration a convenient and satisfactory embodiment of the invention. It is to be noted in this connection that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit or the principle of operation of the various parts.

The preferred embodiment of the present invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention, a portion of the garment to which the putton is applied being shown in dotted ines.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the position assumed by the parts when the button is being withdrawn from engagement with the portion of an article of apparel, shown in section.

Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the invention the parts being shown in the position assumed when the device is being applied.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawingathcre is provided a button 1 in the rear face of which projects an eye "2 slidably engaged with the improved attaching member indicated in its entirety by the numeral 3.

In the present instance the improved attaching member is formed desirably from a single piece of resilient metal such as wire, desirably but not necessarily of a semi-circular form in cross section, the piece of metal being bent upon itself intermediate its ends to provide resilient arms a and 5. It will be observed that the strip at its point of distortion is flattened so that the flattened surfaces of the Wire are arranged in close relation with each other consequently assuming a substantially circular form for facilitating the application of the attaching member in a manner that will be hereinafter apparent, while in addition the flat sur faces of the metal strip are normally arranged in yielding engagement with each other throughout their length. The arm 5 is offsetintermediate its ends to provide a U sliaped button receiving portion 6, the offset portion lying in a plane which is common to both arms. A hook 7 is formed on the terminal of the arm 5, the bend 8 thereof being offset in the plane of the offset portion G.while the bill 9 thereof is straight and is extended in a plane at approximately' right angles from the longitudinal axis of the arm 5 to project over and beyond the terminal of the other arm l being arranged in close relation withthe terminal of the arm 4. The eye 2 of the button is insertible between the free end of the bill and the terminal of the arm l when the arms are extended and is slidably arranged between the flat faces of the arms so as to be engaged in the bend of the hook 8 or in the U-shaped portion 6, being prevented from displace ment from the attaching member owing to the elongated hill 9 of the hook.

In use, in attaching the button the attaching member 3 is raised to assume a position perpendicular to the rear face of the button whereupon the eye is moved between the arms I and 5 until the bill strikes the inner portion of the eye as indicated in Fig. 4:, the

parts being maintained in this position owing to the resiliency of the arms and obviously permits of a ready application of the attaching member through a button hole 10 in an article of apparel 11. Subsequent to passing the attaching member through the button hole 10 the eye of the button is moved between the arms so as to be received in the offset portion 6 and retained against displacementby the arm 4:, the attaching member of course being arranged on the inside of the garment while the arms serve to retain the button against accidental displacement. In withdrawing the button the eye is again slid between the arms 4 and 5 and arranged in the hook 7 and by exerting a pull on the button it can be readily removed from position. During this action of removing the button it will be observed that the hill of the hook serves as an abut- As many changes could be made in the,

above construction and many apparently widely dilferent embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and. not in a limited sense. It is also to be understood that the language'used in the following claim is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention, which, as a matter of language mightbe said to falltherebetween.

In a button fastener the combination with a. button, an eye projecting from the rear face thereof, formed from a single piece of resilient wire bent upon itself to provide a pair of resilient arms normally arranged in yielding relation with respect to each other throughof an attaching member out their length and between which arms is slidably arranged and supported the eye of the button, a U-shaped button receiving portion formed in one of the arms, and a hook formed on the terminal of the same arm and having the bill thereof projecting at right angles to the arm and projected over and extended beyond the terminal of the other arm and arranged in close relation therewith for preventing accidental disengagement of the eye and serving as an abutment for coiiperating with the eye in applying and removingthe button.
