-' HAT PIN.
APPLIOATION FILED 0013.27, 1904.
" 6 UNITED STATES.
Patented. June e, 1905; PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLIN s. H. JOHNSON, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO F. W. JOHNSON, sa, OF CUMBERLAND, MARYLAND.
HAT-PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 791,795, dated. June 6, 1905.
Application filed October 27, 1904. $eria11io. 230,236.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN S. H. J OHN- soN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hat-pins; and the object of my invention is to construct a hat-pin whereby when the same has been placed in a hat it will be impossible for the pin to become detached from said hat.
Another object of this invention is to provide a removably-attached ball for a pin which is adapted to be placed upon the point of the pin and be locked thereon by means carried by said detachable ball and the point of the pin.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device for fastening or securing pins, especially hat-pins, into the article or material to which they are applied or in which they are worn to insure their protection or safety, and the invention as contemplated by me and the many advantages of my hat-pin will be apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the claims.
Reference will now be had to the drawings accompanying, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved hat-pin. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the pointed end of the pin, showing the removable ball in vertical section. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the removable ball; and Fig.4: is a longitudinal sectional view of the removable ball, showing the same near the pointed end of a pin.
Referring to the drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates a pin havinga fixed head 2, which may be of any desired ornamentation. The pointed end of the pin, as designated by the reference-numeral 3, is provided with a plurality of annular depressions 4:, which arei formed in the pin adjacent to its pointed en The reference-numeral 5 designates the removable ball, which is adapted to be attached to the pointed end of the pin. This removable ball may be of any desired ornamentation, and in the accompanying drawings I have illustrated the same as conforming to a hollow sphere. In the ball is secured a sleeve 6, which centrally of its length is provided with an indentation 7, and when the removable ball is attached upon the end of the pin the indentation 7 is adapted to engage in one of the annular depressions 4c of said pin.
' In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated my invention as applied to a hat-pin, and inthis instance when the hat-pin has been passed through a hat the removable ball is adapted to be attached upon the pointed end of a pin, whereby the pin will be prevented from becoming lost or removed from the hat unbeknown to the person wearing the same.
The removable ball may be employed in connection with other types of pins than that illustrated, and it is obvious that the construction of the same is susceptible to various changes which will be permissible by the appended claims.
' Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. A hat-pin having a fixed head, said pin having a plurality of annular depressions formed adjacent to its pointed end, a removable ball, said ball having a sleeve mounted therein, said sleeve having an indentation which is adapted to engage in one of the annular depressions of the pin when said ball is placed upon the pointed end thereof, substan tially as described.
2. The combination with a pin having a plurality of" annular depressions formed adjacent to its pointed end, of a'removable ball, said ball having a sleeve mounted therein, and means formed integral with said sleeve for securing said ball upon said pin, substantially as described. 3. In a=device of the type set;.forth, th
combination with a pin having a plurality of annular depressions formed therein, of a ball,-
said ball having a sleeve mounted therein, said sleeve having an indentation formed therein and adapted to engage in one of the annular depressions of said pin, substantially as described.-
In testimony whereofl affixmy signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
