CUFF-BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,094, dated December 12, 1899.
Application filed April 13, 1899- To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, \VALTER ROHRBEK, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Yorktown Heights, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff- Buttons; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 4
The invention has relation to cuff-buttons; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, and inexpensive button which may be easily inserted through the buttonholes of the cuff and after insertion be locked against accidental detachment.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the button before it is inserted through the buttonholes of the cuff. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the base of the button when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the button afterit has been inserted through the buttonholes of the cuff and locked in place, and Fig. 4 is a plan View of the base of the button when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 3.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the base of the button,provided with a tubular shank 2. The head of the button comprises a soft elastic sleeve 3, preferably formed of rubber, and a post 4:, which extends through the sleeve and is provided with heads 5 and 6, the latter being located within the tubular extension 2', through which the post 4Epasses.
7 is the post-fastener which in the present instance consists of a plate which is pivoted to the base 1 of the button and is formed with a notch 8 at one end to engage the post. The other. end of the plate projects slightly beyond the edge of the base of the button and is preferably serrated to facilitate the manipulation of the plate.

In operation, the parts being in the position shown in Figs, 1 and 2, the sleeve 3, with its post 4, is inserted through the buttonholes of the cuff. The sleeve 3 is now compressed by forcing the post 4 inward until its head 6 passes beyond the inner face of the base of the button. Thelocking-plate 7is now swung withits notched end 8 into engagement with the post and the elastic or flexible sleeve is held compressed in the position shown in Fig. 3 and, with the head 5 of the post, forms the head of the button.
It will of course be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and thominor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this in vention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed,and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. A button composed of a base, a shank and an elastic head, the normal diameter of i which is less than that of the base and practically the same as that of the shank, and means for compressing said head to increase its diameter to exceed that of the shank, said means adapted to hold said head in compressed position after it has been inserted through a buttonhole, substantially as shown and described.
2. A button composedof'a base, a shank and an elastic tubular head, the normal diameter of which is less than that of the base, a post extending through the head and shank,
and means for locking the post after the head has been compressed,to increase its diameter, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A button composed of a base, a hollow shank, and a head, said head consisting of an elastic sleeve located on a headed post extending from the hollow shank, which post,when forced inward, compresses the flexible sleeve to the form of a button-head, and means for locking the sleeve after it has been compressed, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. A button consisting of a base, a hollow shank, a tubular elastic sleeve, a post having a head at its lower end, said post extending through said tubular sleeve and shank and provided with a, head at its upper end, and a my hand in presence of two subscribing Witloeking-plate pivoted to the base of the butmesses.
