- This invention relates to a fastener for carriage curtains and the like, and the object is first, to provide a device of the character de scribed, the two members of which may be securely locked .against accidental disen gagement one from the other, and second, to make it impossible to leave the rotatable stud of the male member in a partially locked position, that is, the two members of said fastener) are either wholly looked or wholly unlocked one from-the other. ln devices of like character now in use, through carelessness or accident-the rotatable stud is often left in a position between its locked and its unlocked position and pressure against the curtain is apt to cause the stud to rotate to its unlocked position, thus allowing the female member to become disengaged from the male member.

Be it known that 1, GEORGE W. J. Mira- YHY, a subject of the King of England, residing at Merrimac, in the county of Essex andv State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful .improvements in Curtain-Fas-l teners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fastener for carriage curtains and the like, and the object is first, to provide a device of the character de scribed, the two members of which may be securely locked .against accidental disen gagement one from the other, and second, to make it impossible to leave the rotatable stud of the male member in a partially locked position, that is, the two members of said fastener) are either wholly looked or wholly unlocked one from-the other. ln devices of like character now in use, through carelessness or accident-the rotatable stud is often left in a position between its locked and its unlocked position and pressure against the curtain is apt to cause the stud to rotate to its unlocked position, thus allowing the female member to become disengaged from the male member.
The invention further consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the accompanying specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.

In the drawings, 10 is a curtain provided with a perforation` 11 substantially elli tical in outline.` `A front ring 12 is provide with an aperture 13 adapted to register with a' perforation 11 in the curtain 10. The eXterior of the front ring. 12 is convex in cross section and said ring is provided with two diametrically opposite depressionsv 14. The front ring 12 is also provided with, four prongs 15 which extend through the curtain 1() and are clenched over the back face of the back ring 16. The front ring 12 and the back ring 16 'together with the curtain ltlconstitute a female member 17. A malemember 18 consists of a base 19 adapted to be secured to apost 20, said ost beingr one of` the supports for the top o a carriage. The base 19 is provided with two intersecting grooves 21 tion` 23 and an aperture 24 leading from said recess to the front of said base. The diameter of the aperture' 24 is less than the width of the grooves 21 and 22. A rotatable stud 25 is. provided with a convex portion 26 adapted to engage either of the grooves 21 or 22. A compressions ring 27 located in the recess 23 surroun s a pivotal screw 2S, said .screw having screw-#threaded engagement with the rotatable stud 25,: whereby said screw and said stud move as one piece. The operationof my improved curtain fas tener is as follows: Wlhen it is desired to lock the two members 17 and 18 of said fastener together, the stud 25 is rotated by the thumb and finger to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The female member i7 is then placed on the male member 1S andthe stud 25 is turned to a position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the corners of said' stud engaging the' depressions 14, 14 said depressions aiding the groove 22 in locking said stud against accidental rotary movement. lt will be seen that if the stud 25 should be released, by the fingers before it has been turned a fullv ninety decrees, the convex portion of said stud will engage the sloping sides of the groove 22 and'by reason of the 'spring pulling on said stud 'will cause said stud to move to the position shown in Figs. l and The ridges 29 formed by the grooves 21 and 22 are so formed and the spring is of such tension that it a practical impossibiland 22 ,rpreferably semi-circular in cross sec- Ahe 'base 19 is provided with a recessl said grooves, the other of said parts having aity for the stud 25 to remain in a halfdocked osition. Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire b v Letters Patent to 'secure is:
1. As an article v'of manufacture, a curtain fastener comprising a male and a female member, said male member formed in two parts one rotatable upon the other, one of said parts provided with .two grooves separated by sharp radiating ridges formed by convex portion adapted to engage and lit said grooves.
2. As an article of nmnufactnre, a curtain fastener comprising a male and a female member, said male member formed in Atwo parts one rotatable upon the other, one of said parts provided with twol grooves sepa-- rated by sharp radiating ridges formed b v said grooves, the other ol' said parts having a convex portion adapted to engage and lit said grooves, and a spring adapted to hold said convex portions in one ol said grooves vand lock said parts against rotation relatively grooves, and a spring adapted to hold said stud against said base, said female member provided with an aperture adapted to receive said male member, said rotatable stud adapted to lock said male and female members together.
4. As an article of manufacture, a curtain fastener comprising a male and a female member, said male member consisting of a base provided with two grooves of substantiall'v semicircular cross section separated b v sharp radiating ridges formed by said grooves, a rotatable stud provided 'with a convex portion adapted to engage said grooves, and a spring adapted to hold said stud against said base, said female member provided with an aperture adapted to receive said male member, said rotatable stud adapt-- ed to lock said male and female members together.
