- My invention relates to improvements in catch devices for the pin portions of socalled belt-pins, brooches, breast-pins and other articles of this general character employing a pin held at one end cooperating at its pointed end with a guard or catch with which it releasably engages; and my object is to provide novel and simple improvements in catch devices as hitherto provided, whereby the pins will be prevented from accidentally disengaging from the cooperating catch devices, but will be capable of ready disengagement therefrom by the user. and which will minimize danger of tearing laces or other fine fabrics to which the pins are applied.

SAFETY-CATCH FOR PINS.
Application filed December 1, 1915. Serial No. 64,570.
To all "LUILOWL it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLOTTE F. VVEsT, a citizen of the United States, residing at 1721 Champlain avenue, Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety-Catches for Pins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in catch devices for the pin portions of socalled belt-pins, brooches, breast-pins and other articles of this general character employing a pin held at one end cooperating at its pointed end with a guard or catch with which it releasably engages; and my object is to provide novel and simple improvements in catch devices as hitherto provided, whereby the pins will be prevented from accidentally disengaging from the cooperating catch devices, but will be capable of ready disengagement therefrom by the user. and which will minimize danger of tearing laces or other fine fabrics to which the pins are applied.
Referring to the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a so-called belt-pin, with a catch device for the pm made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken at the line 2 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 is a broken sectional view taken at the line 3 on Fig. 2 and viewed in the direction of the arrow; Figs. 4: to 7 inclusive, are views similarto Fig. 2 of some of the other forms in which my invention may be provided; and Fig. 8, a view like Fig. 2 of still another modification.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the body of the belt-pin is represented at 8 and the pin portion thereof at 9, the pin 9 being pivoted to the rear face of the body portion 8 at lugs 10 on the latter as indicated at 11. The pointed end of the pin 9 cooperates with a safety catch device represented at 12 which is made from a strip of metal of any desired width, bent into a. form resembling in general an open fiat spiral, the sections or sides of which represented at 13 to 17 inclusive extending at angles to each other as represented. The space between the sections 15, 16 and 17 forms a seat for the pointed end of the pin 9, which latter is prevented from becoming accidentally disengaged from the catch device by the section 17 thereof, the relatively sharp angles at the junctures of adjacent ones of the side sections forming Specification of Letters Patent.

The side of the catch device 12 beyond that nearest the pivot 11 of the pin is, by preference, closed tb prevent damage to the goods to which the pin is applied, especially if it be lace or other relatively fine fabric. This may be accomplished in any suitable way as by soldering or otherwise securing a plate such as that represented at 18, to the catch device, to extend across one of its open sides as represented in Figs. 2 and 3.
The idea as explained of the construction illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 is carried out in the modifications shown in Figs. 1, 5, 6 and 7, but is somewhat amplified however. In Fig. l the convolutions of the catch device are of a greater number than in the case of the construction shown in Fig. l, the end of the section 17 having an added convolution which may be curved or extend at an angle to the section 17 or may be formed of two angularly disposed sections represented at 19 and 20, these sections furnishing added security against accidental disengagement of the pin 9 from the catch device.
In the construction shown in Fig. 5 the sections forming the convolutions of the guard device are arranged at such angles as to produce a spiral structure of general. triangular form, the angles of which are of such degrees that the abutments for the pin 9 at the junctures of adjacent sections will serve effectually to prevent the pin from disengaging from the guard device.
In Fig. 6 I have illustrated a modification which exhibits a feature which may be employed in any one of the constructions shown in the drawing. It consists in roughening or corrugating the surfaces of the guard device with which the pin 9 may come in contact when the pin engages the guard device. The roughened surfaces are inclicated at 21 and as will be manifest serve to further minimize danger of disengage ment of the pin from the catch device.
In the construction shown in Fig. 7 I have shown my invention as embodied in a device which combines a more or less true spiral with a spiral of angular form. The true spiral portion is represented at 22,
this portion connecting With sections 23, 24, 25 and 26 Which are disposed at angles to each other as represented to prevent accidental disengagement of the pin from the catch device.
In each of the constructions illustrated there is provided a plurality of angles formed at the juncture of adjacent sections comprising the guard device. This feature is of advantage inasmuch as the pin-point in case of a stress on the structure tending to move the pin out of engagement With the catch device, instead of being deflected in such movement to a position Which augments the danger of release, is held prac' tically to a straight line movement Without deflection. If desired the various angles between the sections forming the catch-devices may be extended beyond the planes of the faces of these sections as shown of the construction illustrated in Fig. 8.

hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A safety catch for a pin comprising a member of general spiral form having portions between its ends extending at angles to each other to present relatively sharp angular corners forming abutments for engagement with the pin.
2. A safety catch for a pin comprising a member of general spiral form having portions between its ends extending at angles to each other of approximately ninety degrees or less to present relatively sharp angular corners forming abutments for engagement With the pin.
