I. ROSEIIGRANS. WEED CUTTER FOR GULTIVATOR FLOWS.
No. 471,687; Patented Mar. 29, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
WEED-CUTTER FOR CULTlVATOR-PLOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,687, dated March 29, 1892. Application filed August 19, 1891. Serial No. 403,097- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OSEPHUS RosENcRANs, a citizen of the United States, residing at J udson, in the county of Smith and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Weed- Outter for Cultivator-Flows, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide cultivator-plows with a knife arranged at the side of the shovels and projecting laterally from the sides thereof for cutting off weeds and to level and pulverize the earth; and in carrying out my invention I proceed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a View in elevation of a cultivator-plow having my Weed-cutting knife attached in position to the leg thereof, and Figs. 2 and 3 are views in detail of the parts of the knife in illustration of the construction of the same and the mode of adjusting the parts relatively to each other.
The letter A indicates the knife of the desired length and with two holes a and a at its inner wide end, by which i'tzis attached to the plate or shank B. This plate or shank has an angle end b, with series of holes 1 and 2, the hole 1 receiving the pivot-bolt by which the knife is permanently secured to the plate and the holes 2 for the purpose of changing the angle of the knife relative to the plate.
I) is a vertical slot formed in the plate B for the passage of a bolt by which to secure the plate to the cultivator-leg. Pivoted to the upper end of plate B by rivet b -is an extension 0, having a longitudinal slot 0, the same as the plate B, to receive a bolt'for attachment of said extension to the cultivator-leg, and this extension 0 also has a curved slot 0' just above the pivot-rivet b coincident with a hole b in the top end of plate B,whereby the angle of the two parts B and 0 relative to same may be vertically adjusted, so that the knife will cut at any desired depth or above the surface of the earth.
The knife may be quickly and easily applied in position, and it is designed to use one such knife at each side of the cultivator and to any ordinary cultivator-plow, and by changing the angle of the knife more or less cutting-surface is presented to the earth. It is durable, not liable to injury or breakage, and very simple in construction and operation.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentj v The weed-cutter adapted to be attached to the leg of a cultivator-plow, composed of the knife A, with holes a and a in its inner end, plate or shank B, with angle end I), having a pivot-hole 1 and adjustment-holes 2,-vertical slot 1), and extension-plate O, pivoted to the plate B, having longitudinal slot 0 and curved slot 0, substantially as described, for the purposes specified.
