UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE I-I. EDWARDS, OF JOHNSTON, RHODE ISLAND.
PAPER-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,466, dated January 19, 1897.
Application filed November 6, 1896. $erial No. 611,212. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. EDWARDS, of Johnston, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement-in Paper-Cutters; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in paper-cutters by which the papercutters are adapted for use as an envelopopener and an overhanging ruler.
The invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction by which the paper-cutter is adapted for a variety of uses, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
A paper-cutter is, owing to its infrequent use under ordinary conditions, liable to be placed out of sight and has to be searched for when required. By constructing the paper-cutter so that it serves a variety of useful purposes it is more likely to be kept in sight.
Figure 1 is a side view of a paper-cutter provided with a cutter-plate adapted to cut open envelops, books, and other similar ar ticles and secured so that one edge forms a projecting ruler which can be used to draw lines in ink. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the improved paper-cutter. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line A A, and Fig. 4 is atransverse sectional view on the line B B.
In the drawings, 5 indicates a sheet-metal paper-cutter forming a parallelogram with angular edges.
6 is a spring-plate having the beveled cutting edges 7 and 8, as also along one side the straight edge 9. The spring-plate 6 is bent, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the cutting edges may be used in the opening of envelops and for other purposes.
The spring-plate 6 is secured to the sheetmetal paper-cutter 5, preferably, by the rivets 10 and 11, so that the straight edge 9 project-s over the edge of the sheet metal 5, pref erably parallel therewith, so that when a pen is drawn along the edge 9 any ink deposited on the edge will not mar the paper on which an ink-line is drawn.
The paper-cutter is by the improvement described adapted for a variety of uses. It is inexpensive and supplies a long-felt want.
Having thus described my invention, I 55 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- In a compound device of the nature described, the combination with the sheet-metal plate 5, of the spring-plate 6 provided with the cutting edges '7 and 8 and the straight edge 9 secured to the plate 5 so as to extend beyond one edge, as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE H. EDWARDS.
