COMBINED CLEAVER AND MEAT-TENDERER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 9, 1907.
Application filed June 17,1905. Serial No. 265.771-
T0 all whom, it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, FRANK \Vnrrn, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Cleaver and Meat-Tenderer; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andv exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The objects of this invention are to provide a cleaver for butchers or household use which can also be employed as a meat-tenderer, to thus secure a single implement having the functions of two tools, to thereby increase the usefulness of a cleaver, to obtain a meat-tenderer which can be used with great effectiveness, to secure simplicity and cheapness of construction, and to obtain other advantages and results, some of which may be referred to hereinafter in connection with the description of the working parts.
The invention consists in the improved cleaver and meat-tenderer combined and in the arrangements and combinations of parts of the same, all substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embraced in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an implement of my improved construction; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same, taken upon line w 90, Fig. 1.
In said drawings, 2 indicates the blade portion of my improved device, which partakes in general of the character of a cleaver, being a wide heavy blade sharpened at one edge, as at 3, and provided at an upper part of one of its ends with a handle 4, adapted to be grasped by the hand of the operator as usual in cleavers. At the forward end of the blade 2 its upper corner is forwardly beveled and provided with a series of teeth 5, which series of teeth may be of greater or less length, but preferably about an inch and a half.
On either side of the blade 2 are arranged lateral Wings 6, which provide at their upper edges auxiliary rows of teeth 7, adapted to cooperate with the teeth 5 and form a meattenderer. These wings 6 are preferably stamped out of sheet metal, having a lower portion 8, adapted to lie llatwise against the blade 2, amiddle portion 9, projecting per pendieularly from the blade 2, and an upper portion 10, parallel to the blade at a desired distance therefrom. These upper portions 10 of the wings are serrated at their upper edges or provided with teeth 7, which correspend with those of the blade 2 itself. The lower portions 8 of the wings and the blade 2 between are perforated and receive fastening belts or rivets 11, by which the three parts are bound firmly together.
The points of all the teeth, both on the wings 6 and blade or body portion 2 of the implement, have their points lying in substantially the same plane, which plane by reason of the bevel of the forward end of the blade 2 is at an angle to the length of the implement, as shown by line A in Fig. 1. Thus when the tenderer is employed it effectively engages the meat without the hand of the user touching the same or engaging the table-top.
Obviously more wings 6 than I have shown or a less number than are shown might be employed without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and, furthermore, their detail construction may be likewise modified as desired.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is An article of the kind described, comprising a single blade having one edge sharpened, a series of teeth formed at an obtuse angle on one corner of the opposed edge of the blade, Z-shaped plates secured at an angle on each side of the series of teeth and each plate having teeth on one edge, the teeth being paral lel with the teeth on the blade, and a handle arranged parallel with, and near the back edge of the blade on the end opposed to the teeth, whereby the handle is removed from the table when either the blade or teeth are being used, to prevent injury to the hand.
I11 testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of June, 1905.
FRANK WHITE. l/Vitnesses:
CHARLES H. PELL, RUSSELL M. EVERETT.
