UNITE .1
ANDREW J. WILLETTS, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
TWINE-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 30, 1909.
Application filed September 1G, 1908. Serial No. 452,439.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ANDREW J'. l'lfiLLn'r'rs, a citizen of the United States, residing at h/finneapolis7 in the county ol Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Twine- Cutters, of which the following is a spee`.ication.
This invention relates to cutlery and has special reference to device which is einployed in cutting twine and the like.
An obfect ol' this invention is the provision el' a device of this character that may be applied tothe thumb of the operator so tl' at twine or the like niay be cut easily and quickly during the packaging and tying of articles.
The invention further designs a device of this character' which is to be worn on the thuinb ol the o ierator with a guard for the purpose of shie ding the Vfingers of' the op erator while using the saine to prevent the cutting of the 'fingers when the operator is employed in other work than. cutting of the twine. i
The invention has for a still further object the provision of a device of this character which is rovided with means whereby the cutting b ade may be reinoved frein the device in order to be sharpened.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent lfreno the following description and it will beunderstood that changes in the speci'c structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specication, and in which like characters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the corn plete device, Fig. 2 is an edge elevation ofthe same, Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device, Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modified forni of the device.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates a metallic band which is adapted to be placed about the thumb of the operator. The inetallic band 10 is provided with flanges 11 and 12 which are disposed parallel upon the upper i face of the band; The flange 12 is raised a slight distance above the upper edge of the flange 11y and is beveled. toward. its inner sursaine.
lace, The llangc 11 is provided at its opposite extremities with set screws 13 which are adapted to iinpinge a blade 14 against the flange 12 which for-ins a guard l'or the blade 111. The guard is so positioned in relation to the blade 14 that the outer edge is raised slightly abovethe cutting edge ol the blade 14 while the inner edge, which is beveled is engaged against the blade 14 at a point slightly below the upper cutting edge ol' the The set screws 13 are employed for the purpose of' releasing the blade 14 when it is desired to sharpen the saine or to renew the saine as is found necessary ln the modification shown in Fig. 4l a band 15 is employed to encircle the thumb el' the operator which is provided upon its upper 'face with undercut flanges 16 and 17 to engage the lower flanged extremity oll a blade 1S. lll the construetien shown in this \nedi fied `forni is preferred the blade 18 must be vf'rictionally engaged between and beneath the flanges 16 and 17 and in order to hold the saine securely in position set screws X are engaged in the flange 17. The inodilicd 'forni shown in Fig. el discloses the -flange 17 as being raised above the flange 16 parallel with the blade 18 to forni a guard therefor and is beveled upon its upper extremity to adrnit oil' free access to the edge of the blade 1S. vrllhen it .is desired to rcrnove the blade 1S Afor the 'purpose ol sharpening or oll rcnewing the saine it is necessary to insert an instrument between the flanges 16 and 17 and to force the blade ,1S longitudinally 'from between the flanges.
That is claimed. isz- 1. ln a cutting device the combination of a band, a flange positioned upon the upper lace ol said band, a second flange disposed in parallel on said band and extended beyond the upper edge ol said first flange, a blade disposed between said flanges, one side thereof engaged against said second `flange and set screws carried by said first flange for engagement with said blade for iinpingng the saine against said second flange.
2. In a device of the class described. the combination ol' a band with parallel flanges disposed upon said band, a blade secured between said flanges, one of said flanges extended upwardly beyond the edge of said blade and against the side of the same as far l In testimony whereof l affix my signature, as the cutting edge thereof, the opposite of in presence of two Witnesses. said langes extended about a lane formed T -1 We v e at the lower edge of said bladeD and set Ah DRWY J' X lLLETTS' screws carried by one of said flanges for enltnesses;
gagement With said blade to secure the same J. N. BARNES,
in position, E. J. SULLIVAN.
