JOSHUA WILLIE JONES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SCALPEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,435, dated May 29, 1894. Application filed May 26, 1893. Seria1N0.475,567. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSHUA WILLIE J ONES, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scalpels, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in scalpels, and like knives, and it has for its object to construct the blade of the knife in such manner that the said blade in addition will be provided with a cutting surface at the heel and likewise with a cutting surface at the point,
the cutting surface at the point being carried a predetermined distance along the back.
Another feature of the invention is to so shape the heel and point cuttingsurfaces'that there will be no angles.
Theinvention consistsin the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is aside elevation of the improved knife; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken practically on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the invention the knife is constructed with concaved side faces a and with a rib-like back a, as shown in Fig. 1. In cross section the knife blade is rendered more or less tapering or wedge-formed, the sides being curved inward. The ordinary cutting edge I), is continued at the heel b, the said heel cutting edge being preferably made upon a curved line, and the edge extends to the back or shank, as shown in Fig. 1. The
ordinary cutting edge Z),'is further continued in'a curved line around the point and over the back, the return or back cutting edge beingdesignated as 19 and where the return or back cutting edge connects with the shank or rib of the blade aslight shoulder is formed, and the shoulder is more or less graduated in its formation. This shoulder will form a stop to limit thedepth of the cut and will enable the operator to perform his work in a very accurate manner. Thus it will be observed that the blade presents no pointed cutting surfaces, but all of the cutting surfaces are regular. In fact, there are no angles, and owing to the cutting surface being located at the heel, front and back portion, as well as at the lower portion of the blade, the blade may be manipulated in many ways to produce a proper out, and may be used in places where an ordinary knife would be used with difficulty, or could not be properly used at all. When the blade is given the razor-like shape in cross section, as shown in the drawings, it need not be honed but may be readily sharpened by simply being stropped.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an improved article of manufacture, a scalpel formed with a heel, and provided with a cutting edge extending from the juncture of the heel of the blade with the shank to and around the point and over a portion of the back to a stop formed thereon, substantially as set forth.
