MAIZE CUTTER OB GATHERER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented N0... re, rare.
Application filed. October 11, 1913, Serial No. 794,676. Renewed April 10, 1916. Serial No. 90,283.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK F. CHRISTIAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kirkland, in the county of Childress and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Maize Cutters or Gatherers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a maize cutter or gatherer and has special reference to a device which is adapted to be carried by the hand of the user whereby the maize may be easily cut and gathered.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which is provided with a simple means for cutting maize and also being so formed as to allow the same to be efiiciently secured upon the hand of the user.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective View ofthe device showing the same carried upon the hand of a person.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of a persons hand illustrating the means for supporting the device thereon. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the cutter or gatherer. Fig. 4: is a section taken on the line 4.4: of Fig. 3 looking in direction of the arrow.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 designates the primary section which is provided with a knife 2. This primary section is provided at one end with the adjustably attached bent body 3 which is adapted to fit around the thumb of the user for holding the device thereon, and
preventing the same from being accidentally removed. This body 3 is provided with the slots 4 and 5, the slot 4 being adapted to carry the thumb encircling band 6 whereby this body 3 will be held in its correct position upon the hand of the user. In order to prevent the primary section 1 from cutting into the users hand, there is provided a palm engaging lip 7 and a hand engaging lip 8. These two lips extend at right-angles to the knife 2 so as to allow the same to rest evenly upon the hand of the user and to present an even bearing surface.
There is also provided an auxiliary section 9 which is semi-circular in cross-section for allowing the same to be easily gripped without presenting any sharp or rough edges. This auxiliary section is provided I with a cutting edge 10 and extended portion 11, this extended portion 11 being pivotally secured to the reinforcing projection 12 by means of the pin 13. In this manner it will be seen that by pressing upon the auxiliary section 9 the cutting edge and knife will pass each other so as to easily cut the maize when desired. In order to allow the auxiliary section 9 to be opened easily, there is provided a finger encircling band 14 which is carried by the auxiliary section and is adapted to fit over one finger whereby the auxiliary section will be easily swung open. A. wrist encircling strap 15 passes through the slot 5 in the body 3 and this strap 15 passes around the wrist of the person an may be provided with any suitable adjusting means for allowing the device to be used by a person having a large or small hand. A hand encircling strap 16 passes through the slot '17 formed in the member 7 for firmly holding the device upon a persons hand.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a simple device has been produced for supporting the cutter or gatherer upon a persons hand in such a manner as to allow the two sections to come into engagement for cutting maize. However, the device is so formed as to prevent the same from presenting any roughened bearing sur faces. It will also be seen that the bent body 3 will fit around the thumb of the user and will'prevent the device from being jerked or pulled from its correct position independent of the straps.
The primary section 1 is provided with a slot 18 while the bent body 3 is provided with a slot 19 adapted to register with the slot 18. A. bolt 20 passes through the slots 18 and 19 whereby the length of the primary section may be adjusted.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
1. A maize cutter of the class described, comprising a primarysection and an auxiliary section, means for retaining said sections upon the hand of the user, said auxiliary section being substantially semi-circular in cross section so as to conform in contour to the hand when the auxiliary section is being swung toward said primary section, said sections being provided with cutting edges for allowing an article to be cut as the auxiliary section is swung toward said primary section.
2. A maize cutter of the class described,
comprising a primary section and an auxiliary section, said primary section provided With a knife, angular lips formed integral upon said primary section and adapted to rest evenly upon the hand of theuser so as to allow said knife to extend at an angle thereto, said auxiliary section being pivotally secured to said primary section and being provided With a cutting edge, means for retaining said primary section and said auxiliary section upon the hand of the user, said auxiliary section being adapted to be gripped so as to be swung for allowing the cutting edges of said knife to pass each other for cutting an article, said lips being adapted to present an even bearing surface and prevent injury to the hands of the user When the device is being operated.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two WitIlGSSBS,
FRANK F. CHRISTIAN. Witnesses:
