UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. VIOKROY, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT m PARlNG-KNIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,998, dated June 18, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. VICKROY, of Washington city and District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit and Vegetable Paring Knives, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the knife and guard. Fig. 2 is a front view. Fig. 3 is a back View. Fig. 4 is a side View of the knife-blade. Fig. 5 is a side view of the knife-handle. Fig. 6'is a top view of the guard.
The nature of my invention consists in so constructing the knife that the arm which secures the adjustable guard to the handle shall also, when applied, serve as a means for fastening the shank of the blade in the socket of the handle. My invention also consists in cutting slots in both arms of the guard, so that the cut of the blade in either paring or slicing fruits, 850., can be regulated. This also enables the knife to be used by left-handed persons, and also allows the cut to be made toward as well as from the person.
The construction and operation of my invention are as follows:
A is the handle, and B the blade, both of which are constructed of any suitable material and in the ordinary manner, with the exception that the blade is not permanently riveted to the handle, the socket A of the handle and the shank B of the blade being relatively of such dimensions as to allow of the readyina is a square opening cut through the handle A, and b is a slot cut in the shank B. This opening a and slot 1) are to be respectively so arranged that when the shank is inserted in the socket A as far as the shoulder b will permit the opening a and slot b shall be coincident. 0 is the guard, which is constructed of any suitable material, and is formed as shown in Fig.
6. It consists of a long bar or rod, sufliciently elastic, and extends nearly the length of the blade. This bar is provided with arms D D, one at each end, which are turned off nearly at right angles thereto.
Either arm may act as a bolt to secure the blade B to the handle, since, when used as a right-handed knife, or cutting from the person, the arm D is passed through the opening a and slot 1); and when used as a left-handed knife, or cutting toward the person, the arm I) is used to fasten the blade and handle together.
These arms D D are made square, and have slots d d cut on their upper faces. The same number of slots is cut on the face of the arm D as on the face of the arm D, so that the guard may be not only adjusted to any width, but the slice cut may be of the same thickness throughout, instead of triangular.
When the arm D of the guard is used as the rivet its square shoulder rests against the side at of the opening a, and, by the elasticity of the guard, braces the arm D in proper relative position; and when the arm D is used as the rivet, .the arm D becomes the brace of the guard.
E is a groove cut in the handle, in which the guard rests when not desired for use.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The adjustable and reversible guard 0, having square arms D D, slotted on their upper faces, so arranged as to render the knife capable of making a right and left hand out, substantially as described.
2. The slotted handle A, blade B, and guard 0, provided with adjustable slotted arms D D, the whole being combined and arranged substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
G. H. VICKROY.
