Description
(N0ModeL) 'P. H. WILKS.
KNIFE.
No. 561,842. Patented June 9, 1896.
m I111 H J UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK HENRY 'WILKS, OF NEVPORT, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- I-IALF TO JOHN D. JOHNSTON, OF SAME PLACE.
KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,842, dated June 9, 1896.
Application filed March 10, 1896. Serial No. 582,640. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK HENRY WILKs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Newport and State of lthode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in knives, and which, though designed primarily for a fruit-knife, is applicable to other uses.
It has for its objects, among others, to provide a simple and cheap knife having a cutter on the back thereof by which the fruit may be peeled without danger of cutting the hand or of soiling the hands.
It consists of a knife of any desired shape and having upon its back a cutter so constructed as to readily remove the peel and formed so that the peel will free itself as it comes through the cutter.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is an edge View of the knife. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the cutter.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referringnow to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the blade, and B the handle, which maybe formed integral with the 40 blade or maybe of wood or any other desired. material affixed thereto in any suitable manner. The blade is preferably curved and has upon the back thereof a cutter 0, formed of thin steel and afiixed thereto in any suitable 1nannersuch, for example, as shown in this instance, where it is shown as having its ends passed through an opening I) in the blade and seated in and secured in recesses in the 0pposite side of the blade. This cutter is conical in form, so that the peel as it is removed by the cutter will free itself, entering the smaller end and passing out at the larger end.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. The cutter may assume a different form from that shown, if desired.
\Vhat is claimed as new is l. A fruit-knife having a blade with an opening and a cutter secured therein, and curved and disposed transversely of the blade, as set forth.
2. A knife having a blade with a conical cutter on the side thereof, disposed trans- Versely of the blade and having its ends bent and secured upon the underside of said blade as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two snbscrib- 7o ing witnesses.
FRANK HENRY YVILKS.
