V NITED ST TES PATENT OFFIC WILLIAM E. BROOK, or DUNELLEN, NEW JERSEY, ssrenon TO GEORGE E. BEINoKEEHoEE', OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
' from the edge of the knife, and bent at right- VEGETABLE PARER AND SLICER.
SPECIFICATION forming arser Letters Patent No. 294,362, dated March 4, 1884. Application filed October 11, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. BROOK, of Dunellen, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vegetable Parers and Slicers; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in parers and slicers for removing the rinds of .and slicing vegetables and fruits'such, for instance, as potatoes and apples; and the object of the invention is to produce a parer and slicer which can be manufactured and sold at a very small cost, and which-shall be strong and durable and can be very easily kept clean, the construction being such that no recesses are formed in which dirt can lodge. In order to effect this, I form the handle and the guide of one continuous piece of wire, that portion of the wire which forms the handle being bent spirally to form a spiral cylinder of suitable diameter, and that portion of the same which forms the guide being extended in a straight line longitudinally over and a short distance angles near its outer end; andthe knife consists of a flat blade, which is soldered or otherwise attached at each end to the wire in such position that its cutting-edge shall be about parallel with the guide. By means of this construction a very convenient and effective parer and slicer is produced, which is simple and easily handled, and is free from any recesses in which dirt can lodge.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan View of my improved parer and slicer. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, showing the edge of the knife;.and Fig. 3, a transverse section of the knife and the guide on theline a: 00.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the several figures.
These are formed from one continuous piece of wire, of suitable thickness, and preferably of galvanized wire. That portion of the wire which forms the handle is bent spirally to form a spirally-sided cylinder of suitable diameter to be held conveniently in the hand, and of suitable length to form a convenient handle; and that portion of the wire which forms the guide B is extended longitudinally in a straight line and as nearly asrnay be parallel with the edge of the knife G, and a portion, b, thereof, near its outer end, is bent at right angles to A represents the handle, and B the guide.
the main portion, as shown. The knife 0 is made from a plate of steel, and one edge, 0, of the same is ground to form the cutting-edge of the parer. soldered or otherwise secured to the spiral portion, as at d, and near its opposite end it is similarly secured to the portion 1; of the guide at a suitable distance from the guideB to permit the cutting of a paring of proper thickness and the passage of the same between said knife and guide.
- If desired, the outer end of the blade 0 may be extended beyond b and curved, to form a corer, f, as shown.
I do not claim, broadly, a parer having its guide and handle formed from one continuous piece of wire.
What I claim as my invention is A parer and slicer having a handle, A, and a guide, B, formed from one continuous piece of wire, said wire being bent spirally to form said handle, and extended longitudinally to form said guide, and a knife, 0., secured to said handle A atone end and to said guide B at its other end, as shown and described.
M. H. TOPPING, JOHN S. THORNTON.
The inner end of said knife is
