Description
0. WALLMAN.
PARING KNIFE.
APPLICATION FILED r1313. 20, 1912.
1,034,542. Patented Aug. 6, 1912.
Witnesses Inventor Acto rn eys OTTO WALLIVIAN, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
PARING-KNIFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 20, 1912. Serial No. 678,901.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, OTTO WALLMAN, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Faring-Knife, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paring knives, and has for its object to provide a simple, convenient and efficient implement for paring potatoes, apples and other vegetables or fruits.
To the above end, this invention is embodied in a knife of this character embodying a blade offset from a point near its inner end to its outer end and away from the sharpened edge thereby forming a rounded nose along the sharpened edge, and a guard secured to the blade and extending around the nose to the inner end of the blade, whereby the inner end of the blade may be used for paring purposes and whereby the outer or pointed end may be used for cutting out defects and the like.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters indicate similar parts, and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the paring knife. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, parts of the guard being broken away. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the knife. Figs. 4 and 5 are enlarged sectional details taken on the lines 44 and 55 of Fig. 2, respectively.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 6 indicates the handle or hilt having the blade 9 attached thereto by means of a ferrule 7. The blade 8 which is pointed atits outer end, is offset in the plane thereof from a point near the inner end to its outer end, and at a distance equal to its width away from the sharpened edge 11, the sharpened edge of the outer or offset end being designated by the numeral 10. The offset portion 9 forms a rounded nose 12 along the sharpened edge and a corner 13 between the nose and the said portion. A guard 14 extends from the corner 13 along and spaced to one side from the sharpened edge around the nose 12 to the inner end of the blade, and has the ears l5 and 16, respectively, at its inner and outer ends, which ears are secured to the blade by means of rivets 17 or in any other suitable manner. The sharpened edge 11 of the inner end of the blade extending around the nose 12 to the corner 13 is beveled on its lower or outer side, and the outer face of the guard 14 is beveled or curved as designated by the numeral 19, whereby the guard cooperates with the inner end of the blade to provide convenient means for paring vegetables or fruit. The lower or inner edge of the guard 14, designated by the numeral 18, is spaced sufiiciently from the sharpened edge of the blade to prevent the blade from making an excessively thick out. 4
In use, the inner end of the blade 8 may be conveniently utilized for paring vegetables and fruit, the rounded nose 12 being adapted to enter depressions in the surface of the vegetables or fruit, while the outer or pointed end 9 of the knife is useful for cutting out defects or for otherwise cutting the vegetables or fruit for which the inner end of the blade is not applicable. This device therefore conveniently combines a paring knife and a cutting knife in such a relation that the use of either will not be encumbered by the other.
The blade 8 is preferably constructed of steel tempered after the outer or pointed end thereof has been offset, and the guard 14 is constructed of steel or other suitable material. This device therefore provides for a convenient, inexpensive and eflicient paring knife, it being understood that this device is susceptible of slight alterations or deviations in its details within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. A paring knife embodying a blade offset from a point near the inner end to its outer end and away fro-m the sharpened edge to form a nose along the sharpened edge, and a guard secured to the blade and extending around the nose to the inner end of the blade.
2. A paring knife embodying a blade offset in the plane thereof from a point near the inner end to its outer end, and at a distance equal to its width away from the sharpened edge, the offset portion forming Patented Aug. 6, 1912.
a rounded'nose along the sharpened edge In testimony that I claim the foregoing and a corner between the nose and the said as my own, I have hereto affixed my slgnaportion, and a guard extending from the ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
said corner along and spaced to one side 01 OTTO WALLMAN. the sharpened edge around the nose and to l/Vitnesses: the inner end of the blade and having ears H. GRIsWOLD,
at its extremities secured to the blade. lV. BARNES.
