KNIFE OR SCISSORS SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,228, dated November 5, 1895. Application filed March l2, 1895. Serial No. 541,497. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. GHAFFIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Helena, in the county of Phillips and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Knife and Scissors Sharpener, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in knife and scissors Sharpeners.
The obj ect of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device capable of readily sharpening scissors and knives and adapted to hold the blades in proper position in order that an inexperienced person may accurately sharpen scissors or knives.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a knife and scissors Sharpener constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view.
Like numerals of reference indicate corre sponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a stook having an outer rectangular portion or head 2, and having its inner portion shaped into ahandle 3. The head of the stock is provided with a longitudinal slot 3, arranged horizontally and receiving a iile 4, having upper and lower file-surfaces, and adapted to be moved into and out of the slot to expose different portions of its surfaces to scissors or knives being sharpened. The outer end of the stock has its upper portion downwardly and inwardly beveled at 5, and the lower portion 6 is extended beyond the upper beveled portion 5 and is slightly beveled at its upper face at 7 to form a knife-blade-receiving recess at the lower face of the file for sharpeningthe blade of the knife. The file is adapted to it against the innerend of the slotted portion of the head, and is firmly held against lateral movement by a rectangular casing 8, constructed of sheet metal and composed of sides conforming to the configuration ofthe head, and a top connecting the sides and formed integral therewith.
The upper portion of the front of the stock is beveled or cut away at 7 at the lower edge to form a knife-receiving recess, and by having such a recess both at the top and the bottom of the iile-blade a knife may be readily sharpened without turning or reversing the stock.
The casing is provided at its front end with an integral spring 9, curved upward and then downward to forin a spring-loop and inclined downward and inward below the loop to form a supporting portion. Either blade of a pair of scissors is adapted to be interposed between the spring and the beveled end 5 of the stock, and is thereby held in proper relation to the file, across which it is drawn to sharpen it. This action is repeated until the blade is properly sharpened, and then the other blade is similarly operated.
The file is held against accidental slippin g inward or outward by a screw 10, arranged vertically and located above the `file and mounted in a threaded opening 12 of the stock. The head of the screw is located at the top of the casing and is adapted to be readily turned by a screwdriver, or a thumb-screw may be employed, if desired.

lt will be seen that the device is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it is adapted to enable knives and scissors to be readily sharpened, and that the iile may be readily adjusted to bring fresh portions of its surfaces to be acted on by the blades when necessary.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
