SHARPENING DEVICE Filed April 4, 1946 INVENTORZ Jfarold ,Bro wn, Y.
Patented Jan. 6, 1948 SHARPENING DEVICE Harold Brown, Denver, 0010.
Application April 4, 1946, Serial No. 659,561
2 Claims.
My invention relates to a new and useful sharpening device for use in sharpening the blades of cutting instruments, such, for example, as scissors, and the like, and one object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character having a base member around which an endless sheet of emery cloth or paper, or other endless abrasive means is removably mounted so that when worn out it can be readily replaced by another.
A further object is to provide a device of this character with a guide member which is arranged at an angle to the base member and provided adjacent to the abrasive member with a recessed portion for receiving dust and other debris which may accumulate when the blade of a knife or pair of scissors are being sharpened.
Other objects will hereinafter appear and in order that the invention may be fully understood reference will now be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is an isometric view of my sharpening device.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the base member and the abrasive member, on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the difierent parts, 2 designates the base member which is provided at one side with an upwardly extending guide member 4, the lower portion of which has a beveled portion 6 and a rabbeted or grooved portion 8 which communicate with each other.
An endless abrasive member ID operably extends around the base member 2 in the form of an endless belt, so that when a portion thereof is worn out said endless abrasive member Ill may be moved to bring a fresh surface into position for use. The abrasive member ID is retained upon the base member 2 by a marginal flange l2 extending longitudinally thereof and projecting into an inclined groove l4 formed in the base member, the opposite margin of the abrasive member l extending into the rabbet or grooved portion 8 in the guide member 4.
When the sharpening device is in use the blade of a knife or a pair of scissors may be held at the proper angle upon the abrasive member 10 by placing such blade against the adjacent side of the guide member 4, while the blade is moved back and forth upon the abrasive member. Any dust or other debris produced during the sharpening of the blade enters the recess [6 formed by the beveled portion 6 of the guide member 4, and thus avoids damaging the edge of the tool. The blade can also be placed against the beveled portion 6 of the recess l6, as the debris may be automatically discharged from the recess by holding the device in an inclined position while the blade is being sharpened.
2 When in use my device may be held in various positions as the base member or the guide member can be placed upon any suitable support, such, for example, as a table, or held in one hand while an article being sharpened is held in the other hand and moved back and forth upon the sharpening element.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that I have provided an eflicient sharpening device which may be manufactured and marketed at small expense and while I have illustrated one form of my device I reserve all rights to such other forms and modifications thereof as properly fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A sharpening device comprising a base member having an inclined groove extending longitudinally thereof, a guide member extending upwardly from one side of the base member and provided with a longitudinal rabbet the bottom of which is on a level with the upper surface of the base member, and an endless movable sharpening element extending entirely around the base member and having one margin extending into the inclined groove and its opposite margin extending into the rabbet.
2. A sharpening device comprising a base member having a longitudinal groove near one margin thereof, a guide member extending upward from the other side of the base member and recessed and rabbeted longitudinally adjacent to the base member, an endless abrasive element extending around the base member and provided at one side with a marginal flange slidably arranged in the groove, the other margin of said abrasive element being slidably arranged in the rabbet.
HAROLD BROWN.
