3 Claims.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in knife sharpeners and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a device that will conveniently support a plurality of abrasive surfaces of different coarseness so that the same will be applicable for sharpening knives to different degrees of precision.

Another important object of the present invention is to provide a knife sharpener including a pair of members each supporting abrasive surfaces that may be selectively ositioned for engaging a knife blade that is to be sharpened.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a knife sharpener that is quite neat and attractive in appearance, highly eflicient, requires no mechanical skill to operate, requires no oil, cannot injure thin bladed knives, and can be renewed by replacing the abrasive cloth strips when worn.

A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a device of the aforementioned character that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure l is a perspective view of the knife sharpener constructed in accordance with the present invention; and,

Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially through the center of Figure 1.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral represents a substantially rectangular base member of preferably fibrous material such as wood. FiXedly secured by a suitable adhesive material, such as glue, to the upper flat face [2 of the base member is a rectangular strip of abrasive cloth M.

The numeral 16 represents a substantially rectangular retaining member of preferably fibrous layered material such as plywood.

38 and 40 having their head portions 42 recessed in the lower face of the base member. The upper free ends of these fasteners extend through apertures 26 and 2B and receivably engage wing nuts 44 for attaching the retaining member relative to the base member.

The abrading or abrasive strips l4, l8 and 20 are of relatively different coarsenesses, so that a selected abrasive strip may face outwardly to engage a knife blade for sharpening the blade to a desired precision.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A sharpener comprising an elongated base member having substantially vertical apertures adjacent its ends, the lower ends of said apertures being enlarged, headed bolts received in the apertures, the heads of said bolts being received in the enlarged lower ends of said apertures to permit the lower face of said base member to rest fiat upon a supporting surface, the upper ends of said bolts being threaded and projecting outwardly from said base member, an elongated retaining member having openings adjacent its ends receiving the upper ends of said bolts, nuts threaded on the upper ends of said bolts, and abrasive strips secured to the upper face of said base member and to both faces of said retaining member, said strips being of relatively different coarsenesses.

A sharpener comprising an elongated base member having substantially vertical apertures adjacent its ends, the lower ends of said apertures being enlarged, headed bolts received in the apertures, the heads of said bolts being received in the enlarged lower ends of said apertures to permit the lower face of said base member to rest flat upon a supporting surface, the upper ends of said bolts being threaded and projecting outwardly from said base member, an elongated retaining member having openings ad.
