Description

E. B. HAYWOOD.
KNIFE SHARPENER.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 4, 1913.

xnrrn-snanrnnnn.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, EDMUND B. HAYWOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at. Raleigh, in the county of Wake, State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in KnifeSharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in sharpening devices and particularly to decutler'y or other edged tools. a
One object of the invention is to provide a simple device of this character by means of which a knife or theflike may-be passed therethrough to be effectively sharpened, and in which the pressure on the knife blade can be easily accomplished.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken'in' connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: tion of the sharpener. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section on the line 4 -4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section showing the knife in posit-ion to be sharpened.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 and 11 represent respectively the upper and lower blocks, these blocks being of suitable thickness and preferably rectan ular in plan View. To the the upper block 10 are secured the abrading elements 12, these elements being of any suitable material, as metal file, or stones. These abrading elements are secured in rooves 13 extending transversely of the un er face of the block 10, and are arranged in suitably spaced parallel relation. Similar abradin elements 14 are secured in grooves 15 in t 1e upper face of the lower block 11, and are m Specification ,of Letters Patent. Application filed April 4,1918. Serial No. 758,869.

parallel relation with each other, but in staggered relation to the elements of the block 10. The block 10 is formed with perforated ears 16 through which suitable fastening devlces may be passed to attach the device to a support. Secured to the under face of the block 10, and adjacent the rear edge thereof 1s one end of a bow spring 17, the opposite end of said spring being secured to'the upper face of the block 10. The spring 17 permits the blocks 10 and-11 to be yieldably adjusted towardand away from each other and pressure on the knife to be regulated.
In using the device, the knife blade is inserted between'the free ends of the blocks and pressure applied on the upper block. The knife is then moved longitudinally-between the blocks, the abrading elements beveling both sides of the edge of the knife at'the same time. With the device it is only necessary to pass the knife back and forth between the blocks several times to produce a keen edge;
What is claimed is:- I
In a cutlery sharpening device, a block arranged for attachment to a support and provided with a plurality oftransversely disposed parallel grooves in the upper face thereof, a second block disposed over the first block and in a normally irncl-ined position with respect thereto, said being grooved in its underface, said grooves being arranged in staggered relation with respectto the grooves of the first block, abrading strips secured within the grooves of the block, the inner ends of the strips of the second block being normally disposed between the corresponding ends of the strips second blockof the first block and a bow springl embracing the proximated portions of e blocks EDMUND HAYWOOD,
