UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES I]. CASSADY, OF RODEO, NEW MEXICO.
DISK-SHARPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
- a citizen of the United States, residing at Rodeo, in the county of Grant, State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disk-Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following'to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such. as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to disk sharpeners.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a disk sharpener which can be readily associated with a disk plow or a disk harrow so .as to effect the sharpening of a disk while the machine is in mot-ion and without requiring the removal of the disk or the least disorganization of the machine part to arrive at the result' sought.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a disk sharpener of the character referred to in which the grinding element may be adjusted relatively .to the disk. being sharpened so as to bear upon the latter with the proper .force and in the proper relation.
With the above and other objects in view,
the inventionconsists in the details of conapplied, Fig. 2, a side elevation of the sharpener on an enlarged scale, Fi 3, a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2, Fig a section-on the line 44 of Flg. 3, Fig. 5,
a detail perspective View of the supporting brackets of the sharpener, Fig. 6, a detail perspective view of the grinding element carriersupporting arm, and Fig. 7, a detail perspective view of the grinding element carrier.
Referring to the drawings A represents a cultivating disk and B the scraper supporting arm of a disk plow all of well known construction. Clamped to the arm B is a bracket 10 and adjustably connected to this bracket is the inner end of a grinding ele ment supporting arm 11. It will be noted that the bracket 10 is provided with a plurality of openings 12 while the inner end of the arm 11 is'provided with a plurality ,of openings 13 certain of which latter are adapted to be brought into registration with the openings12 to permit of the passage of bolts 14: thercthrough and the securing of the arm'll to the bracket 10 in different adjustments. The outer end of the arm 11 is offset with respect to theinner end and this ofiset outer end is provided intermediately with spaced ears 15 between which is pivotally mounted agrinding element carrier 16 which extends contiguous with the outer end of the arm 11. The outer face of the carrier 16 is grooved as. at 17 and this groove is crossed at spaced points by bridges 18. Disposed in the groove 17 is a grinding element 19 which is held against movement longitudinally of the carrier 16 by means of binding screws 20 mounted in the bridges 18 and manipulated to bind respectively upon the grinding element 19. Mounted in the outer end of the offset portion of'the arm 11 is an adjusting screw 21.
Rotatably mounted on the inner end of each adjusting screw 21 is a socket 22 which receives one end of a spring 23, the other- Patented Nov. 12, 1912. Application filed March 21, 1912. Serial No. 685,378.
end of said spring bearing against the inner face of the carrier 16. By this construction it will be apparentthat the outer end of the carrier 16 is yieldingly held against movement on its pivot toward the outer end of the offset portion of the arm 11 by means of the spring 23. It will be further apparent that by manipulating the adjusting screw 21 the tension of the spring 23'may be varied and the carrier thus disposed at different angles to the offset .end of the arm 11 and of course indifferent adjustments with respect to the disk being shar ened. This adjustment just referred to Wlll enable the grinding element 19 to be brought into proper relation to a' disk to effect the sharpening thereof. 1
Mounted in the inner end of the offset portion-of the arm 11 is a set screw 24, the forward end'of whose shank is adapted to engage the inner end of the carrier .16 and act as a stop to limit the movement of the outer end of the carrier away from the outer end of the offset portion' of the arm 11 under the influence of the spring 23. This set screw 24 maybe readily adjusted so as.
to' vary the extent of movement ofthe outer end of the carrier under the influence of the spring 23.
What is claimed is:
A disk sharpener comprising a bracket provided with means for attachment to a plow part, an arm adjustably connected to said bracket, ears on the sides of said arm at corresponding points respectively, a grinding element carrier pivotally mounted between said ears, a grinding elementsupported by said carrier, an adjusting screw mounted in the outer end of said arm, and a spring having one end in engagement wlth said adjustingscrew and its other end 1n engagement with the outer end of said oar- 15 men In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
