Description
July 8 1924. 1,500,241
I N VEN TOR.
Patented July 8, 1924.
UNITED STATES FRANCIS M. GUM, OF STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA;
KNIFE SHARPENER.
Application filed July 7,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. GUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sharpening devices especially adapted for use in sharpening knives.
An important object of this invention is to provide novel means whereby a knife may be yieldably pressed into engagement with the sharpening stone and whereby the knife may be presented to the stone at any desired angle. I
A further object is to provide a knife sharpener having novel means whereby the knife may be drawn across stone with a minimum of friction and consequently with a minimum of effort on the part of the operator.
A further object is toprovide a device of the class described which is durable in use, efficient and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective of the improved knife sharpener.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the same.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a base having upstanding ends 6 provided with shoulders 7 on their inner sides to support a stone designated by the numeral 8. A knife 9 is adapted to be passed over the surface of the stone and fits between the stone and a pair of spaced parallel cylindrical rods 10.
"As illustrated in Figure 1 the rods 10.
which are arranged in spaced parallel relation are connected at their ends by means of a pair of connecting plates or straps 12 1921. Serial No. 483,001.
struction the rods 10 are maintained in a spaced parallel relation and are prevented from being accidentally disconnected.
In order that the rods 10 might be yieldingly pressed into engagement with the knife blade there is provided a leaf spring 14 having its ends connected to the cross plates 12 as indicated at 14 and its intermediate portion bowed and secured to the top 16 by means of spaced fastening devices 19. The leaf spring has its ends connected to the cross plates 12 so that the ends of the rods 10 will be yieldably pressed downwardly for forcing the edge of the blade into contact with the stone.
The rods 10 are guided by means of pairs of guide plates 18 secured to opposite edges of the'ends 6 by means of fastening devices 20.
In operation the knife blade is clipped between the rods 10 and the stone and the blade subsequently twisted slightly so that the edge of the same will be presented to the stone at an angle. The blade may now be reciprocated and moved longitudinally of the stone so as to give the blade the desired edge.
If desired the device may be fastened to a wall or upon a table. By reason of the spring 14 the blade is at all times uniformly engaged with the stone and when desired the blade may be readily withdrawn.
I claim:
A knife sharpener comprising a base having upstanding ends formed with shoulders on their inner sides, a sharpening stone having its ends mounted upon said shoulders, a pair of spaced parallel. rods extending above said stone and being formed from round metal, transversely extending con necting members mounted at the ends of said rods and having grooves for receiv ing the ends of said parallel rods and retaining same in spaced relation, a top bar supported above said sharpening stone and parallel rods, and a longitudinally curved leaf spring secured intermediate its ends to said top bar and having its free ends engaging said connecting members between the ends of said connecting members and substantially away from said parallel rods for holding said parallel rods in engagement 5 With said sharpening element and adapted to be yieldable angularly with relation thereto.
