$l'llrltlili lill ifiil lt} DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. it me ltjm 23 eggg 1 Application filed November 2, 19531. Serial No. 512,292.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, VVILLIAlvI H. FRANK- LAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jackson, in the county of llladi son and hltate of lllennesssee, have invented certain new and useful linprovements in tfiharpening Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in sharpening devices and more particularly to such as are employed for sharpening knives -one objectof the invention being to provide a simple structure which may be applied to a table or other support and be operable effectually to sharpen the full length of a knife blade.
A further objeot is to provide a knife sharpeneradaptable for domestic use, which shall be cheap to manufacture but which shall be operable to effect uniform bevels at respective sides of the edge portion of the blade and thus insure a straight and uniform cutting edge.
With these and, other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of cmistruction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
is a view illustrating my improved sharpener and the manner in whlch the same is used In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 Figure 2 is a sectional view of one of the sharpening cones. .Figure 3 is a detail view of the swivelcd guide member, and Figure l; is a plan view of thebase member.
The base 1 of the device may be conveniently made of metal and provided wlth a spring arm forming a clamp 2 to hold the device in place on a table or other support.
The base 1 is provided with three aligning sockets or holes 3. 3 and 4%. Each oi the sockets 3 receives the lower end of a vertical spindle 5 which may be secured therein. Vertically disposed cones 6 of earborundum or other abrading material, are mounted on the respective spindles 5 so that the larger ends of said cones may rest upon the base 1. The upper ends of the spindles 5 pass through holes near respective ends oi a cross-bar 7 and may be headed at their upper ends. The lower end portions of these spindles are threaded for the recepton of nuts 8 whichfbear against the under portion of the base and by means of which the cones may be clamped in place. It is apparent that by loosening thcse l'llltfii, the cones can be turned knife to be Sl'litlPGllQtl and thus prevent excessive, uneven wear on the cones.
The intermediate socket l receives the lower end of a swiveled guide member 9, the
upper end of the latter being freely mounted in a hole centrally between the ends of the cross-bar 7. The swiveled guideniember 9 may be conveniently made in two parts as indicated in Figure 3 and so formed as to provide a vertical slot 10 to receive and guide the knife 11 to be sharpened as indicated in Figure 1.
l t is evident that by moving the knife 1011- gitudinally through the slotted guide-111cmber 9 and between the cones 6, the edge portion of the lmife will be beveled at respective sides thereof so as to produce a straight and uniform cutting edge and by shifting the knife and guide-member, the edge p0rcones mounted between the same and spaced apart, and a slotted guide disposed between said cones and swivcled at its respective ends in said base and crossbar.
3. In a sharpener, thecombination with a base and two spindles attached to said base and projecting therefronncones mounted on said spindles, a crossbar through which said spindles pass, and nuts threaded on the lower end portions of said spindles, of a slotted guide swiveled in said base and cross bar intermediate of said cones and parallel with the axes of the latter.
l. In a sharpener, the combination with a to present fresh surfaces to the base having three aligning sockets and pro- 1 vided With clamping means for attaching sa1d base to a support, of spindles secured to two of said sockets, sharpening cones mounted on said spindles, a cross-bar connecting said spindles and a slotted guide swiveled in said base and cross-bar and disposed between said cones.
