Brinkley, Youngstown, Ohio ApplicationMarch 6, 1950, Serial No. 147,954 2 Claims. (Cl. 76-86) This invention relates to a knife sharpener and more particularly to a knife sharpener incorporating sections of half-round files.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a knife sharpener incorporating sections of half-round files against which a knife may be drawn for forming a hollow ground edge thereon.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a knife sharpener having opposed pairs of sections of half-round files separated by guide means forming right and left pass areas for a knife to be sharpened.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a simply and inexpensively formed knife sharpener which will form hollow ground edges on a knife moved longitudinally therethrough.
The knife sharpener disclosed herein comprises a simple and efiicient solution of the problem of sharpening knife blades and particularly in forming an even longitudinally straight and hollow ground sharpened edge which is the ideal formation of a knife edge. It. has heretofore been proposed to utilize various assemblies of discs, abrasive wheels and the like against which relatively small areas .of the knife blade are sharpened. Such sharpening means form a longitudinally irregular pattern in the edge of the knife and invariably form an angular edge rather than a hollow ground edge as preferred.
The present invention utilizes opposed sections of half-round files spaced by appropriate guiding means so that a knife blade positioned longitudinally of one of the files and adjacent the guiding means and drawn therealong will automatically be presented to the file in such a manner that a'longitudinally straight hollow ground edge is formed on one side of the knife blade. The knife, upon being moved to the other side of the guide means and drawn through the sharpener, again engages its opposite side on the other of the two sections of half-round files and thereby both edges of the knife may be sharpened.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds; the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the inven-. tion herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the knife sharpener showing a knife blade positioned therein.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the knife sharpener shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view of a metal section used in forming a portion of the knife sharpener shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the completed metal section formed from the blank shown in Figure 3.
By referring now to Figures ,1 and 2 of the drawings it will be seen that the knife sharpener comprises a base In having upturned side flanges H and I2. Openings 13' in the base [0 are provided so that it may be fastened to a supporting surface if desired. Two pairs of oppositely disposed openings are formed in the side flanges H and I2 and rivets I4 and I5 are positioned therethrough to pivotally secure the lower ends of a pair of vertical body members it and H to the base 10. The body members It and I? have rolled upper and lowermost edges 56A and B and HA and B, respectively, the rolled edges IBB and NB being formed about the rivets l4 and i5 and the upper rolled edges ISA and HA being formed about a pair of bolts 18 and I9 which are also used to secure the body members l6 and I1 and in pivotal relation thereto. The U-shaped members 29 and 2| are pivoted to the bolts I8 and i9 approximately midway between the ends of the arms of the U-shaped members 20 and 2! so that the free ends of the arms project beyond the pivots formed by the bolts l8 and I9 and form manually engageable handles 20A and 26B and 25A and MB.
The interconnecting sections of the U-shaped body members 20 and 2| are oppositel disposed with respect to one another and extend transversely of the base [0 and present flat surfaces to which are secured two sections of half- round files 22 and 23, respectively. These half-round sections of files have a cut surface on their halfround side of approximately 46 teeth per inch with the flat sides being unbroken.
The half- round files 22 and 23 are affixed to the flat transversely positioned, opposed, vertical surfaces of the U -shaped body members 20 and 2| as best shown in Figure 2 of thedrawings, it being observed that the center of the radius defining the half-round of each of the files 22 and 23 is spaced with respect to the centers of the bolts l8 and I9 so that when the U-shaped body members 20 and 2! are moved, as shown in Figure 2 U-shaped members 20 and 2! to of the drawings, the half-round surfaces of the files 22 and 23 engage a guide member 24 at different vertical planes thereon and thereby present a different wearing surface to a knife blade to be sharpened thereagainst. For example, in Figure 2 of the drawings the half-round file 22 is engaging the guide 24 at a point on a horizontal plane with the center of the bolt I8, while the half-round file 23 is engaging the guide 24 on its opposite side at a point slightly therebelow due to the tilting or pivoting ofthe U-shaped body member 2| on the bolt Hi. It will thus be seen that as the files wear from use they may be moved as described to present new wearingtsuli faces still at the same angle of tangency to'a knife blade to be sharpened.
The guide 24 is corrugated vertically as seen in Figures 1 and 4 of the drawings'and'it'will be seen to be formed of a blank 25 shown in Figure 3 of the drawings including the leg sections 25A and foot sections 25B. lhe blank 25 is corrugated toform the guide 24asi shown in Figure 4 of the drawings and also in the assembly pf knife sharpener in Fi ures 1 and 2 of thedraw ings. The corrugations permit the filings lto drop away from the sharpening area.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that the guide 24 spaces the files 22 and 23 with respect to one another but more impo'rtantly forms a vertical uide against which a knife, shown in Figure K, ma be positioned and held while the same is moved transverse y of the device as shbwn'by the arrow in Figure 1 of the drawings.
