This invention relates to newv and useful improvements in sharpening devices.
More particularly, the invention proposes a new sharpening device having .a plurality of meshing sharpeners and guides and means for adjusting the angular and the relative longitudinal positions of said sharpeners and guides.
. Heretofore sharpening devices have been constructed in which the meshing sharpeners and guides could be adjusted longitudinally relative to each other so that the points of contact between an article being sharpened and the sharpeners and. guides could be varied and selected. .However, the angles of the Sharpeners and guides were fixed. An important object of this invention resides in so constructing the new sharpening devices that the angles, as well as the longitudinal distances of and between the sharpeners and guides may be varied at will.
More specifically, it is proposed to characterize the new sharpening devices by the provision of arcuate elements rotatively adjustably mounted on a pair of spacedmembers which themselves are adjustably mounted to move in a longitudinal line towards and away from each other. It is proposed to mount the plurality of meshing Sharpeners and guides on these arcuate elements in order that the angles between the sharpeners and guides may be varied by adjusting the arcuate elements rotatively. The longitudinal positions of the sharpeners and guides may be varied by adjusting the spaced members longitudinally towards and away from each other.
Another important object of this invention resides in the construction of a sharpening device which includes a plurality of sharpening implements for cutting,'grinding, honing and finishing knives and other articles, and in which the sharpening implements may be adjusted to various angular positions for convenience in engaging the edges or bevels of the knives and other articles against the sharpening implements. More particularly, it is contemplated to mount the sharpening implements upon a turnably mounted support which is mounted on a standard which may be rested on a table or other horizontal article or which may be attached to a wall or other object' It is proposed to associate a pawl and ratchet wheel with the turnably mounted support by which the sharpening implements may be held in various angular positions.

Still another object of this invention resides in the provision of means for removably supporting and clamping the sharpeners and guides on the arcuate elements.
Another object of this invention resides in constructing the arcuate elements with slots through which the stud referred to above passes, and to provide half round guides mounted on the stud and having half round guiding surfaces concentric with the axis of turning of said arcuate elements for turnably holding the arcuate elements. It is proposed to arrange resilient means between and abutting said half round guides for normally urging the spaced members supporting the arcuate elements apart.
Another object of the invention is the construction of a device as described which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost. I
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The sharpening device, in accordance with this invention, includes a standard I2 mounted on a base I3 which may be rested on a table or other flat surface, or which may be attached to a wall or other support. A support ii is turnably mounted on the standard I2 by a stud portion I5 which projects from one end of the support I4 and engages through an opening in the standard I2. A nut I6 threadedly engages on said stud portion I5 for connecting said support I4 and standard I2 together. A ratchet wheel I7 is connected coaxially on the support I l. Specifically, members I8 and I9 are attached to the support I4 with fastening elements 28, and said ratchet wheel I? is secured to the members I8 and I9 with fastening elements 2 I. A pawl 22 is mounted on the standard I2 and is engageable with the ratchet wheel I] for holding the support I4 in selected turned positions on the stud portion I5. This pawl 22 is pivotally supported intermediate of its ends by a pintle 23. A spring 24 is mounted about the pintle 23, see Fig. 6, and acts to urge the pawl 22 into locking position in which its front end engages the ratchet wheel E1. The rear end of the pawl 22 may be manually depressed to pivot the pawl 22 to disengage the ratchet wheel I! which is then free to turn. s.
Sharpening implements 25 and 28 are mounted on the support I4.
The sharpening implement 25 includes a pair of spaced members comprising said member I8 and a member 21. Means is associated with these members I8 and 21 by which they may be relatively adjusted in a longitudinal lin toward and away from each other. This means includes a stud 28 which is fixedly attached to the member M3 by a fastening element 29. The stud 28 passes through an opening in the member 21 for slidably supporting the member 27. The member 21 is also provided with side flanges 30 which engage against the sides of the member I8 to assist in slidably connecting said members I8 and 21. nut 32 threadedly engages on the outer end of the stud 28 for limiting sliding of the member 27. The member 21' is also provided with a fastening element 93 which abuts the stud 28 by which the member 2? may be fixedly attached to the stud 28 so that it is stationary in relation to the member I8 when. desired.
An arcuate element 34 is rotatively adjustably mounted on each of the members 88 and 21, concentric with an axis located midway between the members I8 and 21 and at right angles to the longitudinal line of motion of the member 27 in relation to the member it. Each arcuate ele ment 36 is formed with a slot 35 through which the stud 28 passes.
Half round guides 36 are mounted on said stud 28 and are formed with outer half round guiding surfaces concentric with said axis of said arcuate elements 84 to engage and turnably hold said arcuate elements 34. An expansion spring 31 is coaxially mounted on the stud 28 and abuts the half round guides 36 for normally urging the guides 36 apart and in this way urging the arcuate elements 34 apart and against their arcuate seats on the members I8 and 21.
A plurality of meshing sharpeners and guides 38 are mounted on adjacent outer ends of the arcuate elements 34 and have adjacent working surfaces 39 which diverge outwards in a direction from the axis of the arcuate elements 32, see Fig. 6. These meshing sharpeners and guides 38 preferably are formed of tool steel such as Carboloy. The sharpeners and guides 38 in the design illustrated on the drawings comprise one sharpener or guide 40 mounted on one of the arcuate elements 34 and meshing with a pair of sharpeners and guides 4| mounted on the other of the arcuate elements 34, see Fig. 7. The sharpener and guide 40 is attached to the arcuate element 34 by a clamp piece '52 attached to the arcuate element 34 with a clamp screw and nut 43. The sharpeners and guides 4| are held spaced from each other by a separator portion 34 which is a part of arcuate element 34. The sharpeners and guides M are mounted on the arcuate element 3d with clamp pieces 44 which are held in position with a clamp screw and nut 45. The screws and nuts 43 and 45 may be loosened and then the sharpeners and guides 49 and 4| may be removed and replaced. The arcuate elements 3 1 are turnably adjustably mounted on the members I8 and 27 by clamp screws 46 movable in slots 41 which are concentric with said axis between said members I8 and 21. The clamp screws 46 are mounted on the arcuate elements 34 and engage through the slots at which are formed in the member I8 and 2! and are adapted to hold the arcuate elements 34 in selectively turned positions.
The sharpening implement 26 is identical in construction to the sharpening element 25, except for size. The sharpeners and guides 50 are larger and parts associated therewith ar correspondingly larger. In this form of the invention said sharpeners and guides 58 are in the form of abrasive stones, natural or artificial, The implement 28 includes said member I9 and a member 5! spaced from said member I9. Associated with these member I9 and 5| i means for adjusting these members I9 and Si in a longitudinal line towards and away from each other. This means includes a stud 52 fixedly attached to the member I9 with a fastening element 53. The stud 52 slidably supports the member 5|. The outer end of the stud 52 is provided with a nut 5d. A fastening element 55 mounted on the member 51 is engageable with the stud 52 for locking the member 5| in a' fixed position when desired. The member 5! is provided with side flanges 56 which engage the sides of the member I9 for assisting in guiding the members I9 and El in the longitudinal line.
Arcuate elements 5? are rotatively adjustably mounted on each of the members I9 and 5!. These arcuate elements 5'} are concentric with an axis located midway between the members I9 and 5| and at right angles to the longitudinal line of motion of the member 5| in relation to the member I9. The sharpeners and guides 50 are mounted on the outer adjacent ends of the arcuate elements 51. These sharpeners and guides 59 are provided with adjacent working surfaces 58 which diverge in a direction outwards of said axis. The arcuate elements 57 are formed with slots 59 through which the stud 52 passes.
Half round guides 60 are mounted on the stud 52 and have half round guiding surfaces concentric with said axis to engage and turnably hold the arcuate elements 51. An expansion spring 8! is mounted on said stud 52 and acts against the half round guides 60 for urging the guides to apart and in this way urging the arcuate elements 5'? against the arcuate seats formed in the members 19 and 5!. The arcuate elements 5? may be turnably adjusted and held in various rotative positions by studs and nuts 62 and arcuate slots t3. The studs and nuts 52 are mounted on the arcuate elements 57. The siots 63 are formed in the sides of the members it and El. The sharpeners and guides as are re leasably mounted on the arcuate elements 55 with clamp screws and nuts 63.

The base 13 may be rested on a table or may be attached upon a wall. The angular positions of the sharpening implements and 25 about stud portion 55 may be adjusted for ones convenience. To do this the nut is is given a slight turn so as to be loose. Then the pawl 22 is moved to disengage iron the ratchet wheel 57. Now the support M may be turned to any angular position, as for example, the position shown in Fig. 10. The pawl 22 is released to re-engage the ratchet wheel i? and the nut HE is now tightened.
A knife or other article to be sharpened, conditioned, or finished is merely drawn through the working surfaces 33 or 58 of the sharpeners and guides. The angular positions of these wor Zing surfaces 33 and 58 may be varied for controlling the angle of sharpening of the knife or other object. The studs and nuts 46 and 52 may be loosened to loosen the arcuate elements 36 and 57 which now may be turned about their axis to positions in which the Working surfaces 39 and 58 are as desired. Then the studs and nuts 35 and 32 are retightened to hold the arouate elements 34 and 5? in their new positions.
The members 27 and 5! may be longitudinally adjusted towards and away from members it and I9, respectively, by turning the nuts 32 and 56, respectively. Adjustment of these nuts 32 and 54 force the members 27 and 5! towards the members !8 and 19 respectively when the nuts 32 and 54 are turned in one direction. The springs 3! and 5! are compressed during this adjustment. When the nuts 32 and are turned in the other direction, the springs 37 and GI move the members 27 and 5! away from the members it and It, respectively. This longitudinal adjustment changes the points of crossing of the diverging working surfaces 39 and 58 of the sharpeners and guides 38 and 5@, respectively. The members 27 and 5! may be locked in selected positions by tightening the fastening elements 33 and 55.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A sharpening implement, comprising a pair of spaced members, a stud attached to the first of said members and slidably passing through the second of said members so that the second of said members may move in a longitudinal line towards and away from the first member, a nut threadedly engaged on said stud and selectively controlling the distance that said second member may move relative to the first member for providing relative unyielding spaced positions of said members, resilient means urging said second member away from the first member, arouate elements rotatively adjustably nounted on members concentric with located between said members and at right to said longitudinal line and having slots through which stud passes, and a plurality of meshing sharpeners mounted on the adjacent outer ends of arcuate elements and having adjacent working surfaces iverging in the direction outwards from said axes.
2. A sharpening implement, as defined in ciaim 1, in which resilient means comprises a spring mounted on said stud and acting between said members.
3. A sharpening impiement as define in claim 1, in which clamp screws movable in slots arcuate of said axes act between said members and said elements for clamping said elements in rotative adjusted positions.
4. A sharpening implement as defined in claim 1, in which half round guides mounted on said stud and having half round guiding surfaces concentric with said axes and engaging and turnably holding said arcuate elements, and said resilient means comprises a spring on said stud and abutting said half round guides.
5. A sharpening implement in accordance with claim 1, a standard, a support turnably mounted on said standard, said sharpening implement being mounted on said support, a toothed wheel connected coaxially on said support, and a pawl mounted on said standard and engageable with said toothed wheel for holding said support in selected turned positions relative to said standard.
6. A sharpening implement in accordance with claim 1, a second sharpening implement in accordance with claim 1, a standard, a support turnably mounted on said standard, said sharpening implements being mounted on said support on opposite sides thereof, a toothed wheel connected coaxially on said support, and a pawl mounted on said standard and engageable with said toothed wheel for holding said support in selected turned positions relative to said standard.
