T-his invention-relates to a sharpening device for knives andshear blades, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of the class referred to'for efficientl'y'and expeditiously sharpening' aknife or shear blade when desired. Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 denotes a base meinber having a portion thereof of greater height than the remaining portion and such portion of greater height is indicated at 2 and provides a shoulder 3. The base 1 is of rectangular contour and the shoulder 3 extends lengthwise thereof and is disposed between the ongitudinal center of the base 1 and one side edge thereof.
The base 1' is constructed of metal and has arranged upon its upper face, centrally thereof, a transversely extending retainer and fulcrum for the lower ends of a set of cuttin or sharpening blades to be presentl referred to. The combined retainer and fu crum element is indicated generally at 4 and is formed on the low part 5 of the base 1. The element 4 provides a pocket 6 and the side walls of the latter are indicated at 7, 8 and the end walls at- 9, 10. The pocket 6 is of substantially rectangular contour and is disposed transversely with respect to base 1. The end walls 10 are set up from two oppositely extending, inclined parts, which at the center thereof provides a fulcrum point 11. The parts of the wall 10 extend inwardly from the side walls 7,

The guide members 22, 23 are arranged relatively to the set of blades 47 to provide passages 55, 56 for the positioning of the knife or shear blade when it is desired to sharpen the same. The guide members 22, 23 are arranged at an inclination relative to the set of blades 49 and are adjusted so that the desired bevel with respect to the knife or shear blade will be maintained.
The cutting or sharpening blades are made of high tempered steel and are alternately arranged in the manner referred to so as not to cut low places or hollows in the knife or shear blade while removing notches or broken places in the cutting edge of such blades.
The set of cutting blades is so mounted so as to adjust itself to throw the square cutting edge of the blades of the set in a sharp cutting position.
The element 37 can be quickly detached from the post 34 to enable the removing and replacing or changing of the position of the blades of the set. The cutting blades can be used on their four edges for the entire length thereof, by reversing the top of blade to the bottom and reversing back of blade to front position. By this arrangement all the cutting edges of the blades can be placed in service. The blades are perfectly square on edges from top to bottom. The shifting positions in which the blades are placed provide for the knife blade to control the cutting unit in serviceable position.
It is thought the many advantages of a knife or shear blade sharpening device, in accordance with this invention can be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
- 1. A sharpening device comprising a bodily shiftable sharpenin unit formed of a set of blades, the alternate blades of the set being of the same width and of a different width than the width of the other blades of the set, a mounting for said set to provide for the fulcruming of the set for movement in opposite directions during the sharpening operation, and adjustable means opposing the edges of the blades of said set to provide passages for the objects to be sharpened during the sharpening operation, said adjustable means being angularly disposed with respect to said set.

A sharpening device comprising a bodily shiftable sharpening unit formed of a set of blades, a mounting for the ends of said set to provide for the fulcruming of the set for movement in opposite directions during the sharpening operation, and bodily and angularly adjustable guiding'means arranged at each side of the set and angularly disposed with respectthereto. a 3.:A sharpening device comprising a vertically disposed, bodily shiftable sharpening unit formed of a set of oblong, alternately disposed blades, the alternate blades being of the same width and of a different width than the width of the other blades of the set, angularly adjustable guiding means opposing the lengthwise edges ofsaid blades, and a mounting for the upper and lower ends of said set to provide for the fulcruming of the set for movement in opposite directions during the sharpening operation. 4. A sharpening device comprising a vertically disposed, bodily shiftable sharpening unit formed of a set of oblong, alternately disposed blades, the alternate blades being of the same width and of a different width than the width of the other blades of the set, angularly adjustable guiding means opposing the lengthwise edges of said blades, and a mounting for the upper and lower ends of said set to provide for the fulcruming of the set for movement in opposite directions during the sharpening operation, the mounting for the upper end of said set being detachably secured in position. v
5. A sharpening device comprising a vertically disposed, bodily shiftable sharpening unit formed of a set of oblong blades, a
mounting for the upper end of said set, said mounting provided with apocket having the end walls thereof formed with aligning fulcrum points bearing against the sides of said set, a mounting for the lower end of said set including a pocket having its end walls formed with aligning fulcrum points bearing against the sides of said set, said fulcruming points providing for the bodily shifting of said set during the sharpening operation, and adjustable guides mounted adjacent the edges of said blades and angularly disposed with respect thereto.

A sharpening device comprising a pair of spaced, angularly disposed guide members, a vertically disposed, bodily shiftable sharpening unit formed of a set of opposed, oblong cutting blades having squared edges, and means enclosing the upper and lower ends of said set to provide for the fulcruming of the set for movement in opposite directions durirrg the sharpening operation.
