Description

Nov. 19, 1957 E. E. DEPUTY DEVICE FOR SHARPENING BARBERS SCISSORS, SHEARS AND THE LIKE Filed April 10, 1957 1 EED u i mvEmofi r I I ATTORNEYS United States Patent DEVIQE FOR SHARPENING BARBERS SCISSORS, SHEARS AND THE LIKE Elijah E. Deputy, Gleumoore, Pa., assiguor of one-half to Charles E. Deputy, York, Pa.
Application April 10, 1957, Serial No. 651,942
4 Claims. (Cl. 51-214) This invention relates to a device designed for sharpening scissors, shears or the like, the primary object of the invention being to provide a sharpening device of this character wherein the sharpening element is in the form of a steel bar, file or bar of Carborundum over which the blade of the scissors or tool to be sharpened is moved, during the sharpening operation.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including a base and a support in the form of a roller mounted on said base, and over which the blade being sharpened is moved, guiding the blade over the sharpening bar to insure the accurate sharpening of the blade.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for adjustably mounting the roller support, so that the roller may be held in an inclined position in supporting the blade at the desired position with respect to the sharpening bar, for accurate sharpening of a blade of a particular shape and size.
A further object of the invention is to provide a base and a stationary sharpening member supported in parallel relation with a roller guide means mounted on the base and design for vertical adjustment with respect to the base, so that the sharpening member may be adjusted to various angles as required for a particular use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a sharpening device, constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the sharpening device comprises a base indicated generally by the reference character 5, the base presenting a flat supporting surface from which rises a flange 6 disposed adjacent to one edge thereof, which flange is formed with a cut out portion 7 for the reception of a bolt 8.
The bolt 8 provides a support for the abrasive bar 9 of Carborundum or steel, the length of the abrasive member being equal to the width of the base, so that when positioned for sharpening a blade, the wide abrasive surface will be presented for contact by the blade.
The bolt 8 extends through an opening disposed intermediate the ends of the abrasive member 9, and the threaded end of the bolt receives the winged nut 10, whereby the abrasive member may be moved into close contact with the inner surface of the flange 6 to hold the abrasive member against movement during the sharpening operation.
as better shown by Figure 3 of the drawing, the slot or cut out portion 7 extends inwardly from the upper edge of the flange an appreciable distance so that the abrasive member 9 may be adjusted vertically within the slot to adapt the device for use in sharpening blades of various sizes and shapes.
Extending transversely of the base 5, is a bar 11 which is formed with upstanding ends 12 which are slotted at 13 to receive the ends of the rod 14 that is held in position by means of the wing nut 15 threaded on one end of the rod, the opposite end of the rod being formed into a loop against which the washer 17 engages, the washer 17 being disposed against the outer surface of the upstanding end 12 adjacent thereto.
The rod 14 provides a support for the roller 18 which provides a support for the blade being sharpened, as the blade is moved or reciprocated over the upper edge of the abrasive member 9.
Due to the construction of the guide roller 18, it will be obvious that the roller may be adjusted vertically so that the blade to be sharpened may be adjustedto the desired angle for sharpening purposes.
Spaced ears 19 extend from one edge of the base 5, and are formed with slots 20 for the reception of screws or bolts in securing the base to a supporting surface.
While I have shown spaced ears for the reception of securing means, it is to be understood that the device may be conveniently held in one hand while the other hand operates the blade over the roller and abrasive member to accomplish the sharpening of the blade.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a sharpening device which may be conveniently used with a degree of accuracy, by persons unfamiliar with mechanics, and wherein the blade being sharpened may be moved and guided over the abrasive member due to the construction of the roller, and the blade properly sharpened.
Having thus described the invention:
What is claimed is:
1. A sharpening device comprising a base, a transversely disposed bar mounted on the base, upstanding ends formed on the bar, said ends having slots: extending downwardly from the upper edges thereof, a rod disposed within said slots, a roller mounted on said rodl providing a guide for a blade being sharpened, and a vertically adjustable abrasive member supported on said base in parallel relation with said rod over which a blade movble over the roller is moved.
2. The subject matter as claimed in claim 1, and mechanism for effecting vertical adjustment of said abrasive member.
3. A sharpening device comprising a base, spaced slotted upstanding members mounted adjacent to the side edges of said base, a rod supported within the slots, a roller mounted on said rod and disposed between said upstanding members, providing a guide, and a vertically adjustable abrasive bar mounted in parallel relation with said roller over which a blade being sharpened and movable over said roller, operates.
4. A sharpening device comprising a base, a transversely disposed roller mounted on said base at a point intermediate the front and rear edges of the base, a flange formed at one end of said base, said flange having a cut out portion extending downwardly from the upper edge thereof, an abrasive bar, a bolt extending through said abrasive bar and disposed within said cut out portion of the flange, and a wing nut on said bolt adapted to move said abrasive bar into close engagement with said flange holding said bar stationary for contact by the blade being sharpened and movable over said roller.
