'lfheinvention relates to a sharpener and more especially toa portable knife sharpening device. The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein through the use of a. reciprocating holder a knife, Cleaver or the like can. be readily and conveniently sharpened, the device being novel in its construction and is easy of operation.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device ofl this character, wherein the sharpening stones or slabs can be readily and easily adjusted to enable coarse or line sharpening action and the track for the movable holder for a knife, cleaver or the like is readily adjustable to enable the proper lay of the work with respect to Vthe sharpening stones or slabs for proper sharpening operation.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the sharpening stones or slabs are conned within a tray or box-like container and are above an oil catch pad.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this. character, wherein the holder for the work carries clips for retaining varying sizes of work held thereby for the easy and convenient sharpening of the work.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, which is extremely simple in itsv make-up, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, stro-ng, durable, easily operated, convenient for quick use, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and point- 40 ed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing a cleaver in position for the sharpening thereof.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the device partly in section.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, showing a knife in position for sharpening thereof.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal section through the device showing one sharpening stone or slab raised for its turning,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the carriage or runner for the work holder of the device.
Similar reference characters indicate corre- 3 Claims. l (ci.` 51-214) sponding partsrthroughoutthe several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail the sharpening device comprises a tray or box-like container A which is relatively shallow and elongated having a :dat bottom I0, vertical sides and ends and l2, respectively. This tray or container is p-referably made from sheet metal, although it may be made from any other suitable material and, is open at its top.
Centrally located within this tray or container A is a longitudinally disposed vertically adjustable bar I3 forming a track having a cross formation channel |4 throughout its length and opening through the top thereof for sldably aoco-mmodating a correspondingly shaped guide shoe or iin l5 integral with and depending from a substantially U-shaped carriage or runner I6. This bar I3 at one end is in threaded engagement with a vertically disposed adjusting screw swiveled in a bracket |8 secured to the inner face of one end I2 of the tray or container A centrally thereof. The screw at its upper end has a winged turning head I9 for manual adjustment of the same. The other end of the bar I3 accommodates a set screw 20 fitting a vertically disposed slot 2| formed in the other end of the tray or container. 'Ihus by these screws I l and 2U the bar I3 can be vertically adjusted andheld fast in adjusted position.
Disposed at opposite sides of the bar I3 to be conned within the tray o-r container A are flat faced sharpening stones or abrasive blocks or slabs 2|, each having opposite coarse and ne sharpening surfaces 22 and 23, respectively. These stones or blocks 2| at one end have centrally fitted therein stems 24 in the form of screws connected with swivel taps or couplings 25 loosely engaged in one end I2 ofthe tray or container A, so that by raising the stones or blocks 2| angularly the latter may be turned to bring either surface 22 or 23 to a working position within said tray or container. The other ends of the stones or blocks 2| have centrally fitted therewith hand knobs 26, these resting normally in seating notches 2l cut into the top edge of. the other end of the tray or container A, so that said stones or blocks can be lifted by hand and freely turned.
Beneath these stones or blocks 2| and resting upon the bottom of the tray or container A is an oil absorbing cloth or pad 28 so as to trap spent oil delivered to the stones or blocks during the use thereof for sharpening purposes.
The carriage or runner |6 has adjustably pivoted therein the downwardly bent end 29 of a work holding arm which is of the desired length and carries at its free end an upstanding handle 3i for the manual handling of the holder. On the under side of the arm is a work retaining clamp 32 of a spring tensioned type While on the upper side of the downwardly bent end 29 is another spring tensioned clip or clamp 33, the latter being for retention of. small knives and the clamp 32 is for larger knives or cleavers or the like. The cleaver 34 is shown in Figure 1 of the drawing held by the clamp 32 in a position for the sharpening operation and such cleaver may be shifted laterally of the stones or blocks container, sharpening elements within the con- 2| for the uniform sharpening of its cutting edge. In Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing a knife 35 is shown held by the clamp 33 while the clamp 32 is also adaptable for the holdinglofa knife.
The work holder constituted bythe arm 30 is" reciprocated between the stones or blocks 2| or,V
a container, sharpening elements arranged within said container, a carriage slidable between the elements, a swinging work holder mounted on the carriage, and a vertically adjustable track for the carriage.
2. A device of the kind described, comprising a container, sharpening elements arranged within said container, a carriage slidable between the elements, a vertically swinging work holder mounted on the carriage, a vertically adjustable track for the carriage, and means for adjusting the track.
3. A device of the kind described, comprising a tainer, a carriage movable between the elements, a work holder on the carriage and presenting the work to the elements for sharpening of its cutting edge, a track for the carriage, means for vertically adjusting the track, and means for changing the elements presented to the work.
