Description

Patented Sept. 29, 1925. 1
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
CONRAD J. DO'RFF, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
- KNIFE SHARPENER;
Application filed March 24, 1924. Serial No. 701,266.
To all whom it many concern.
Be it known that I, CONRAD J. DORFF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, inthe county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Knife Sharpener; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference. being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates more particularly to an improved knife and scissorssharpener wherein blade guides are provided at each end of the co-acting sets of sharpening disks for receiving and guiding the blades whereby a. proper cutting edge may be ground on the knife blade.
It is an important object of this invention to provide a knife sharpener of improved and simplified construction wherein gu des are provided for holding a knife blade in a proper sharpening position relative to the sharpening blades.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and accompany ing drawings.
The invention (in a preferred form) 1s shown on the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a knife sharpener embodying the principles of this invention.
Figure 2 is an end elevation thereof mounted on a board.
Figure 3 is a. sectional view taken on line 33 of Figure 2 showing a fragmentary portion of a knife blade.
Figure 4; is a transverse sectional View taken on line 44 of Figure 1 showing a knife blade in section.
As shown on the drawings:
The knife sharpener comprises a base plate 1 adapted to be secured upon a table or mounting board 2 by screws 3 or other suitable means which engage through apertures 4 provided in flat extension lugs 5 which are integral with the base plate.
. Integrally formed at right angles to the ends of the base plate 1 are upright end walls or supports 6 from each of which a lug 5 has been struck. Each of the end walls 6 is provided with a tapered knife blade receiving slot 7 for the purpose of guiding a knife blade 8 when a knife is being sharpened. Formed on each side of the knife blade 7 is an inclined scissor blade slot 9 provided for the purpose of permitting the blades of scissors to be properly guided while being sharpened.
Supported by the end'walls 6 are a pair of parallel shafts 10 each of which has mounted thereon a plurality of sharpener blades or disks 11 separated by speaders orwashers 12. The sharpener blades. 11 on one shaft 10 are staggered with respect tothose on the other shaft and overlap one another as illustrated in Figure 1. The sharpener blades 11 on one shaft are disposed in the planes of-the spacers 12 on the other, shaft. The
sharpener blades may be made of steel or any other suitable material. The sharpener blades 11 and spacers 12 are rotatable between the end walls 6 and may be slightly rotated each time a knife blade is put into position for sharpening. Different portions of the sharpening edges of the sharpener blades are thus brought into position for use.
To sharpen a knife blade 8 the blade is drawn through the guide slots 7 with the cutting edge of the blade adapted to be drawn transversely across the peripheral edges of the sharpener blades 11 where said blades overlap to afford a pocket for the knife blade. The knife blade is thus readily sharpened with the slots 7 acting to hold the knife blade in proper position with respect to the sharpener blades 11.
The slots 9 are provided to permit the blades of scissors to be sharpened on the sharpener blades by simply drawing the scissor blades one at a time through the respective pairs of slots 9 on opposite sides of the middle knife blade slots 7.
By providing the slots 7 and 9 in the end walls 6 knife blades and scissor blades may be easily sharpened maintaining the cutting edges in the proper places. I
I am aware that many changes may be made, and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon, otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
- 1. As an article of manufacture, a support for a device of the class described comprising a base plate, a pair of upwardly extending leg members formed integral therewith on either side thereof, a lug struck from between each of said pair of leg members integral therewith and adapted to receive securing means therethrough, each leg of each pair of leg members being adapted to support cutting members mounted between the opposite legs substantially as described, cutting elements supported by said legs, the adjacent inner edges of each of said legs being shaped to provide a guide slot for vertically receiving an article there.-
through to be sharpened by said cutting members.
2. As an article of manufacture a device of the class described comprising a base plate, a pair of upwardly extending leg members formed integral therewith on either side thereof, a lug struck from between each of said pair of leg members integral therewith and adapted to receive securing means therethrough, laterally spaced circular cutting elements mounted between the opposite leg members, said elements being staggered and adapted to sharpen an article moved therebetween, the adjacent inner edges of each of said legs being shaped to provide a guide slot for vertically guiding said article for engaging the samebetween said laterally spaced cutting elements for the purpose described.
3. Asan articleof manufacture a device of the class described comprising a. base plate, a pair of upwardly extending leg members formed integral therewith on either side thereof, laterally spaced circular cutting elements mounted between the opposite leg members, said elements being staggered and adapted to sharpen an article moved therebetween, the adjacent inner edges of each of said legs being shaped to provide a guide slot for vertically guiding said article for engaging the same between said laterally spaced cutting elements for the purpose described, certain of said leg members having slots extending from the outer edge thereof for providing an additional guide slot for guiding an article; for engaging the same on the periphery of certain of said cutting elements for grinding said article.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
