4 Claim.
This invention relates to a razor blade sharpening device.
The object of the invention is the production of a sharpening device, into which a razor blade can be easily inserted and sharpened and from which the blade can be easily removed.
The second object of the invention is the pro I duction of a sharpening device having parts that can be easily assembled or dismantled.
The third object is the production of'a sharpening device by means of which the faces of the sharpening edge of a blade can be easily sharp ,7 ened devoid of burs or saw cuts.
The fourth object of the invention is the production of a sharpening device by which pressure is exerted on the opposite faces of the sharpening edge of a blade and in staggered relation, preventing excessive pressure on the opposite sides of the blade that is being sharpened, the blade slightly yielding from a straight line at its points of contact with the sharpening members of the device. v
The fifth object of the invention is the production of a sharpening device having sharpen-- ers in flexible relation to each other.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 9, a housing open at 0 its ends, for the razor blade sharpening device, comprises in this instance the bottom wall 20, the side walls 22 having the ends 23 and 24, and the top walls 25, having the inner edges 26 spaced from each other. Longitudinal guide strips 27 5 and a stop projection 28 extend upwardly from the bottom wall 20. The top walls 25 do not extend the full length of the housing, but are cut away as indicated at 29 to form the blade entering pocket 30 atone end of the housing. The
D bottom wall 20 in the entering pocket 30 is thick- The bottom wall 20, the side walls 22 and the top walls 25 of the housing form the longitudinal clamping pockets 38.
A pair of razor blade sharpeners are each indicated in its entirety by the numeral :40, and a pair of said sharpeners are seated opposite each other in each pocket 38.
Each razor blade sharpener 40, comprises the longitudinal member 41, having the outer plane face 42, the inner inclined face 43, the front face 44 and the rear face 45. Each sharpener is indicated with its entering end 47 and its other end 48.
From the inclined faces 43 extend the curved corrugations 50, having the crowns and the valleys 56. The said corrugations 50 have curved faces 57 diverging from the front face 44 to the rear face 45; The members of each pair of the sharpeners 40 are positioned in the clamping pockets 38 with their corrugations in spaced mesh relation to each other. Each pair of razor blade sharpeners is oppositely positioned to the other pair.
A razor blade is indicated at 60 having the openings 61 and the cutting faces 62.
7 An operating handle 65 extends up from the guide bar 66 and from the latter extend pins 67. The blade 60 is first positioned on the supporting tables 32, and the guide bar 66 is placed ,on said blade with the pins 67 engaging the openings 61. Screws 70 having the heads 71 are in threaded engagement with threaded openings in the side walls 22 at their ends 24.
It will be noted that the curved faces 57 of the opposite sharpeners 40 of each pair form an angle with each other equal to the angle between the cutting faces 62 of the razor blade 60.
It will also be noted (for detail see Fig. 9), that at the entering ends 47 of each'pair of razor blade sharpeners 40-the corrugations 50 form entering spaces 75 for the razor blade 60.
Referring to Fig. 10, the modified razor blade sharpeners are each indicated in its entirety by the numeral 80,. The said sharpeners are similar to the sharpeners 40, with the modification that their corrugations 82 comprise flat walls with the'comers 86 and 87, similar to tapered rack teeth. The tapered faces 89 and 90 of the rack teeth may also be curved as shown at 57 Fig. 6.
The razor blade sharpeners 40 and may be made of glass, steel, iron or other materials.
The razor blade sharpeners 40 are securely held in the clamping pockets 38, by reason of their ends 47 bearing against the supporting tables 32 and the lugs 33 and their other ends 48 are clamped by the heads "71 of the screws 70. The razor blade sharpeners 80 are held in place in a manner similar to that described for the razor blade sharpeners 40. To replace any of the razor blade sharpeners 40 and the screws 70 are removed when said sharpeners can be easily detached from the housing of the device. i
To sharpen the razor blade 60 it is first placed on the supporting tables 32. Then the guide bar 66 is placed upon the said blade with the pins 67 engaging the openings 61. The operator then grasps the operating handle 65, enters the blade between the corrugations 50 or 82, at a point just before the corrugations of each pair intersects each other, and then reciprocates the blade. It will be noted that where the said corrugations of each pair of sharpeners meet, indicated at I, Fig. 2, an angle is formed equal to the angle between the inclined faces 62 of the blade.
Referring to Figs. 11 and 12, the housing for the razor blade sharpeners is again shown with the bottom wall 20, theside walls 22 and the top walls 25, the longitudinal guide strips 27 and the longitudinal clamping pockets 38. The heads 71 of the screws '70 are also shown. The razor blade sharpeners are again shown at 40. The bottom faces of the walls 25 are slightly recessed, as shown at 90. Bowed plate springs 91 have their crowns positioned in said recesses and their ends bear on one of each pair of sharpeners 40. Screws 95 are in threaded engagement with openings in the top walls 25 and bear on the crowns of the springs 91.-
The modification with the springs 91'provides means to maintain the members of each pair of sharpeners 40 in flexible relation to each other. Instead of the springs 91, rubber or other flexible material may be used.
Referring to the modification indicated .in Figs.
13 and 14, the housing isagain shown having the bottom wall 20, the sidewalls 23, the top walls 25 with their edges 26, the guide strips 27, the stop projection 28 and the clamping pockets 38.
In each of the clamping pockets 38 is seated, as previously described, a pair of razor blade sharpeners. Each pair of razor blade sharpeners in this modification are shown at 100, and each comprises the oppositely positioned operating portions 101 and 102, which extend about one-half the length of the sharpeners and the clearance portions 103, and 104, which extend through the remaining length of the sharpeners.
By this disposition of parts, when the razor blade 60 is reciprocated in the housing, the top cutting faces 62 of the blade are *sharpened'by the portions 101 and the bottom'faces 62' ofthe blade are sharpened by the portions 102 This modification may be further modified by making each pair of sharpeners 100 of two parts tom wall, supporting tables for a razor blade extending from the bottom wall at one end of said guide strips, stop lugs at the inner end of said supporting tables, said bottom wall, side walls and top walls forming longitudinal clamping pockets, a pair of razor blade sharpeners positioned in each pocket, bearing with one end of each against said supporting tables and stop lugs, screws in threaded engagement with the ends of the side walls opposite said supporting tables and heads for said screws bearing against the adjacent ends of said razor blade sharpeners.

In a sharpening device the combination of a housing comprising a bottom wall, side walls, and top walls having their adjacent edges'spaced from each other, blade supporting tables at one end of the housing, longitudinal guide strips extending up from the bottom wall and joining with said tables, the upper faces of said guide strips and tables on the same level, the said bottom wall, side walls, and'top walls forming longitudinal clamping pockets, a pair of razor blade sharpeners detachably secured in each of said pockets, corrugations integral with each razor blade sharpener, the corrugations of one sharpener meshing with the corrugations of the accompanying sharpener, said tables adapted to have a razor blade positioned thereon and means to move said razor blade from said tables and between the corrugations of each pair of razor blade sharpener.

In a sharpening device the combination .of a-housing open at its ends comprising a bottom wall, side walls and top walls having their adjacent edges spacedfrom each other, blade supporting tables at one end of the housing, longitudinal guide strips extending up from the bottom wall and joining with said tables, the said bottom wall, side walls, and top walls forming longitudinal clamping pockets, a pair of razor blade sharpeners positioned in each of said pockets, corrugations extending from each razor blade sharpener, the corrugations of one sharpener meshing with the corrugations of its accompanying sharpener, one end of each sharpener bearing against said tables, screws having heads in threaded engagement with the side walls of the housing'at its end opposite'said tables, the heads of the-screws bearing against the other ends of the sharpeners and means to move a razor blade between the corrugations of each pair of sharpeners.

In a sharpening device the combination of a housing having a pair of longitudinal clamping pockets, 9. pair of razor blade sharpeners detachably supported in each of said pockets, the razor blade sharpeners in one pocket oppositely positioned to the pair in the other pocket, 9. pair of longitudinal guide strips in the housing, a pair of supporting tables for a razor blade at one end of said guide strips, said tables adapted to have a razor blade having openings supported thereon,
a guide bar, an operating handle extending from the bar, and pins extending from the bar adapted to engage the openings of the razor blade, said guide bar with its appurtenances adapted to reciprocate said razor blade upon said longitudinal guide strips to engage the faces of the cutting edge of the razor blade with said razor blade sharpeners.
