To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANZ A. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful; Improvements in Razor Honing and Stropping Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
'The invention relates to improvements in honing and stropping machines, and more particularly to such as are adapted espe-4 cially for blades.
With this and further objects in view, as will in part hereinafter be set forth, and in part become obvious, the invention comprisescertain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter disclosed and claimed.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved honing 'and stropping device. Fig. 2 represents a front elevation of the same, showing the blade holder in a vertical position, and a blade partly inserted in the blade holder. Figs. 3 and 4 represent respectively, side elevations of my improved device partly in section, illustrating in Fig. 3 the manner in which the device is to be used for honing the razor blade, in which case, the blade contacts with the honing or abrading rollers; and in Fig. 4 illustrating the manner in which' the device is to be used for stropping the razor blade, in which case, the blade engages with the strop; and Fig. 5 represents a cross-section of the body or frame of my improved device, in which I have shown the same provided with strop guiding means to positively insure the proper insertion of the strop when the device is to be used for either honing or stropping.

body or frame comprises two opposite side portions 2 and 3 parallel each to each, and connected by a central cross-piece 4, to which a handle 5 is secured in any convenient or desired manner. The said side portions 2 and 3 are adapted to lie at the opposite edges of a strop 6., with the cross-pieces 4 beneath and the `handle 5 depending therefrom in convenient position to slide the device longitudinally of the strop. f
In Fig. 5 of the drawings, l have shown the body or frame 1 provided with oppo` sitely curved upper and lower guides lettered respectively 22 and 23, the lower guide being connected preferably integrally with the two opposite side portions 2 and 3 of the frame, to correspond with the integral central cross-piece 4 shown in the several views, and the upper guide 22 being connected to said side portions 2 and 3 in an convenient or desired manner. These guides 22 and 23 are so arrang. d with relation to the lower roller of the device, as to provide sufficient space for the entrance of the end of the strop, and are further so arranged that if the strop 6 is to be inserted in the device, when the same is to be used for stropping the blade, the end of the strop after passing over the roller 7 will pass between the roller 14 and the guide 23, and then up over the other roller 7, as illustrated in the full lines in Fig. 5 of the drawings and should it be desired to insert the strop for honing the blade, the end of the strop, after passing under the roller 7, is passed between the roller 14 and the guide 22 and then down under the other roller 7, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
Journaled in the ends of the frame 1 are rollers 7, 7, each consisting preferably of stone or any other suitable honing` or abrading material, rotatably mounted on a cylindrical rod or shaft 8, iixed at its ends to the respective side portions 2 and 3 of the body or frame 1. These two rotatable honing' and stropping rollers 7 are provided with a helical groove i), or if desired, with a plurality of short helical grooves, and serve as rollers for honing' the razor blade when the device is to be used for honing the blade, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and serve as strop carrying or guiding rollers when the device is to be used for stropping the blade, as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the 14 and the upper shaft 13 drawings. The rollers 7-7 are preferably spaced apart for approximately the width of the machine, and disposed intermediate the width ofthe machine are. upwardly 'projecting ears 10. Said ears 10 have upper and lower holes forming bearings for the pivoted ends of an upper shaft 13 and a lower roller 14, both extending transversely of the frame 1. The upper shaft 13 and the lower roller 111 are connected by means of pinions or gears 15 and 16, so that drawing the honing or stropping device along the strop will tend to turn the said shaft 13 and when the direction of sliding the stropping device is reversed, the shaft 13 will be turned over according to the principles already well understood in the art.
The shaft -13 carries the blade holder 17,
lwhich holder may consist of a piece of sheet metal wrapped around the shaft 13, and secured thereto in any convenient or desired 'manner, so as to provide resilient clamping jaws 18 and 19 to receive the razor blade 20 between themselves, as has been common in general heretofore.
The razor blade, as shown, is preferably made of sheet steel, provided with a substantially plane portion along one longitudinal edge, and having a longitudinal cutting edge on the side opposite said portion, Ithe blade intermediate said portion andsaid cutting edge comprising a uniformly concave portion on which the cutting edge v is formed, and lyingl entirely on one side of the central plane of t e said first mentioned portion, and having an offset portion connecting said concave portion with said first mentioned portion. The plane portion 'of the blade is provided with a central aperture 11 conveniently located thereon, adapted to engage with a pressed-out portion 12 on one of the clamping jaws of the blade holder 17 to firmly secure the blade and prevent its accidental displacement from the holder.
The ear or lug 10 of the frame 1 in its upper side, is provided with a recess 21, which recess when the blade holder is in a vertical position, will correspond with the l'space between the resilient clamping jaws 18 and 19, so as t0 provide a ready means for the insertion and removal of the blade 20 fromthe holder 17.
The operation of the device is as follows: `When the device is to be used for honing purposes, the blade holder is swung up as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and the blade to be sharpened is inserted therein With its outer edge parallel to the edge of said blade holder 17; the strop is then passed under one of the rollers 7 at one end of the frame 1 andbetween the lower roller 14 and the guide 22 and then out through and under the other end roller 7 of the device, as clearly indicated in Fig. 5 of the drawings in dotted lines.
The attaehin end of the strop (not shown) is hooke over any suitable support, while its opposite end (likewiseI not shown) is held in one hand. The other hand grips the handle 5 of the honing and stropping device and reciprocates said device back and forth along the strop, thereby permitting the blade to be engaged with the honing or abrading rollers 7 -7 When it is desired to use the device for stropping the razor, it is only necessary to pass the strop over one of the rollers 7, at one end of the frame 1 and between the lower roller 14 and the guide 23 and then out and over the other end roller 7 of the device, as clearly indicated in full lines in Fig. 5 of the drawings; then by reciprocating the device along the strop as above described, the blade will be' brought into contact with the strop instead of with the abrading rollers 7-7.
I am aware that changes'may be made in the several arrangements of the various parts, as well as in the details of construction thereof, without departing'from the scope of my present invention; hence I do not wish to be limited to the arrangements and combinations of parts as herein shown and described, as obvious modilications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. A razor honing and stropping device, comprising a frame adapted to slide longitudinally of a strop, a roller in said frame, a blade holder pivoted on said fraine with a line of pivoting transverse to the strop, means for transmitting rotary movement to said blade holder from said roller, and a roller for honing the blade at each end of said frame, said honing rollers adapted to support and guide the strop when the device is used for stropping the blade..
2. A razor honing and stropping device, comprising a frame adapted to slide longitudinally of a strop, a roller in said frame, a blade holder pivoted on said frame with a line of pivoting transverse to the strop, means for transmitting rotary movement to said blade holder from said roller, and at each end of said frame an abrasivegroller for honing the blade, said rollers adapted to a line of pivoting transverse to the strop,
means located on said frame for permitting the ready insertion and removal of a razor blade in said blade holder, means for transmitting rotary movement to said blade holder from said roller,`and at each end of saidframe a roller for honingthe blade,
said rollers adapted to support and guide the strop when the device is used for strop- 1 to support and guide the strop when the deping the blade.
4. A razor honing and stropping device, comprising a frame adapted to slide longitudinally of a strop, a roller in said frame,
a blade holder, pivoted on said frame With a line of pivoting transverse to the strop, means located on said frame for permitting the ready insertion and removal of a razor blade in said blade holder, means for transmitting rotary movement to said blade holder from said roller, and at each end of said frame a roller for honing the blade, said rollers adapted to support and guide the strop vwhen the device is used for stropping the blade.
