Description
June 21, 1949. A. F. CARLIN SHARPENING DEVICE Filed Feb. 27, 1948 h INVENTOR.
ARV/0f: CARL/N 4 7' TOR/VIM Patented June 2 1, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SHARPENING DEVICE Arvid F. Carlin, Mamaroneck, N. Y. Application February 27, 1948, Serial No. 11,610 6 Claims. (01. 51-214) This invention relates to a sharpening apparatus useful in the grinding of knives, scissors, tools and various implements, and it has for its purpose to provide a device, which due to its construction will permit an easy grinding of the article to be sharpened, especially because said article may be placed in a position, or at an angle, during the grinding process whereby, according to experience, it has been found that a quick and satisfactory result may be obtained.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, and in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my device.
Figure 2 is an end elevational view of same.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view, taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 44 in Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a side elevational view showing a modification of my device.
Figure 6 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 66 in Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a detail view showing a roller and guide member; while Figure 8 is an end view of Figure 7.
It is to be understood that this invention may be made in any size and of any suitable material.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, H1 indicates a housing open at both ends, and, when of metal, made by having a blank of suitable dimension bent upon itself at right angles. A couple of cylindrically formed sharpening rollers, I I, ll, made of the conventional, or any suitable grinding material, are rotatably mounted in guide members I4, by means of bolts l3, as said guide members, which straddle the rollers H, II are in turn, pivotally secured to the housing III by means of bolts l5. The said guide members facilitate the sharpening of different implements by permitting these to be put in the most advantageous position for such sharpening process, incidentally the upper end-pieces of the guide members l6, l6 may also be used to steady the sharpening operation by grippin such endpieces by the fingers during the sharpening process.
The guide members are at the top formed with an angular cut, as shown at H, and the endpieces l6, l6 are thus given a slanting position relative to the side portions l8, 18 of the guide members [4, as may be especially seen in Figure '7, in order, as said before, to permit the right positioning of the article to be sharpened.
In the illustration shown in Figure 3 the guide members l4, M are further provided with projections l9, l9 integral therewith; said projections are at the bottom of the housing upon each side pivotally secured to a transverse bar 20; a screw member 2| countersunk in the bottom of the housing, as at 22 in Figure 4, extends through a correspondingly threaded opening 23 in said bar 20, thereby permitting the relative adjust ment of the rollers H, H during the wear and tear of the latter. The housing I0 is provided with a. V-shaped out 24 upon each side thereof to permit the placement therein of an article to be sharpened, unless the shape, form or condition of the latter should make it more desirable to place the article to be sharpened in the angular cut I! adjacent the end-piece H; of the guide member M.
The housing I0 is further formed with outwardly bent enlargements 25 upon each side thereof adapted to accommodate the ends of the rod 20 in the up and downward slidin movementof the latter.
The bolts l5, l5 may be arranged through the guide members l4, l4 so closely to the rollers II, II, as to exert a braking effect upon the movements of the latter.
In Figure 5 a modification has been shown, as the members l4, l4 herein consist of wires bent upon themselves to form eyelets 26 adapted to receive the bolts l5. The wires I 4', M are further formed with approximately centrally located bends 21, 21 upon which the rollers I I, H are rotatably mounted, while a guide plate 28 is secured to the upper end of the bent wire M, in any convenient manner, as shown in Figures 5 and 6.
The housing ID is in this case also formed with a V-shaped recess.
The purpose and utility of this latter device is as hereinbefore described.
It is obvious that changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts, as shown, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not, therefore, wish to limit myself to the exact construction shown and described herein.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A sharpening device of the class described, comprising a housing, open at both ends, said housing being formed with a centrally located recess upon each side thereof, guiding members pivotally disposed in the housing, rollers turnably arranged in the guiding members, the latter being formed with slanting top portions, whereby to accommodate the article to be sharpened.
2. In a device, as claimed in claim 1, and wherein said guiding members consist of one piece of material bent upon itself.
3. A sharpening device, comprising a housing, guiding members pivotally arranged in said housing, rollers turnably disposed in said guiding members, the latter having an upwardly projecting slanting top portion, downwardly projecting arms integral with said guiding members and being formed with an aperture at their lower ends, a bar arranged at the bottom of the housing and engaging said apertures, said bar having a centrally threaded opening, and a screw projecting through the bottom of the housing and engaging the hol in said bar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A device of the class described, comprising a housing formed With a V-shaped recess in each side thereof, grinding rollers disposed in said housing, guiding members straddling said rollers, said guiding members being pivotally attached to the housing and having said rollers turnably mounted therein, downwardly projecting arms integral with the guiding members and formed with apertures at their lower extremities, a bar at the bottom of the housing and having its ends secured in said apertures, said bar being formed with a screw threaded opening therein, a screw through the bottom of the housing and adapted to engage the opening in said bar, whereby to tighten the rollers, and an enlargement upon 4 each side of the housing to permit a vertical movement of said bar.
5. A device of the class described, comprising a housing formed with a V-shaped recess therein, guiding members pivotally secured to the housing and grinding rollers turnably mounted in said guiding means, each of the latter comprising a wire bent upon itself to straddle a roller, said wire being at the top bent into a'substantially rectangular shape, and a plate secured to said top,
whereby to guide an article to be sharpened.
6. A sharpener comprising a housing, guiding means pivotally arranged in the latter, grinding means turnably arranged in said first means, means for relatively adjusting said grinding means, and an enlargement upon each side of the housing for accommodating said adjusting means, the guiding means consisting of a member bent upon itself to form an upper top portion and depending side portions, said side portions being pivotally secured to the housing, and rollers turnably mounted between said portions, the top portion being at an angle to the side portions.
