Description
June 17, 1941. BROWN 2,245,959
WASHER CUTTER Filed July 23, 1940 Inventor pan/'e/ Brow 1 By 2mm A iiorny Patented June 17, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WASHER CUTTER Daniel Brown, Burlington, N. J. Application July 23, 1940, Serial No. 347,024
2 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and use ful improvements in washer cutters of the type comprising a slidably adjustable knife and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, novel means for releasably securing said knife in adjusted position.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a washer cutter of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in vertical longitudinal section through a washer cutter constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the device.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially n the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of an end portion of the slidable arm and the knife thereon.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a horizontal sleeve I of suitable metal. The bore 2 of the sleeve I is substantially square. One end of the sleeve I is beveled, as at 3. Depending from this end portion of the sleeve I is a center point 4.
Mounted for longitudinal sliding adjustment in the bore 2 of the sleeve I is an arm 5 of suitable metal. The arm 5 is substantially square in cross section. Formed integrally with one end portion of the slidable arm 5 and depending therefrom is a knife 6. The bottom surface of the arm 5 is provided with graduations 1 (see Fig. 3) to facilitate adjusting the knife 6.
The upper portion of the sleeve I has formed longitudinally therein a slot 8 which communicates throughout its length with the bore 2. Operable in the slot 8 on the arm 5 is a shoe which is designated generally by the reference numeral 9. The shoe 9 includes an elongated block In of suitable compressible material, such as cork. The compressible block I0 rests on the arm 5. Mounted on the compressible block ID are resilient metal backing strips II having their end portions bent under and clamped on the end portions of the block III for securing said strips thereto. These end portions of the resilient backing strips I I are indicated at I2.
Rising from the sleeve I on opposite sides of the slot 8 are integral apertured ears I3. Extending between the ears I3 is a pin I4. Mounted on the pin I4 and operable in the slot 8 is a cam lever I5 which is engaged with the shoe 9.
It is thought that the manner of using the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the center point 4 is driven into the sheet of material from which a washer is to be cut, as at I6. Of course, the device is rotated on the center point 4. As the arm 5 swings in a circle the knife 6 thereon cuts the material I6. To adjust the knife 6 relative to the center point 4 the cam lever I5 is swung upwardly from the position illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing for removing the the shoe 9, thereby freeing the arm 5. When the cam lever I5 is swung downwardly the resilient metallic backing strips are flexed downwardly and the element It] is compressed on the arm 5 thus frictionally securing said arm in adjusted position.
It is believed that the many advantages of a washer cutter constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A washer cutter comprising a sleeve having a longitudinal slot therein closed at its ends, an arm slidable in the sleeve, a knife on said arm, a shoe removably and floatingly mounted in the slot and confined by the walls thereof and engaged with the arm, and a cam lever pivotally mounted on the sleeve and operatively engaged with the shoe for pressing said shoe against the arm.
2. A washer cutter comprising a sleeve having a longitudinal slot therein, a center point on the sleeve, an arm mounted for sliding adjustment in the sleeve, a knife on said arm, a shoe operable in the slot and engaged with the arm, said shoe including an elongated block of compressible material and further including resilient metallic backing strips mounted on the block, the end portions of said strips being bent on the end portions of the block for securing said strips thereto, and a cam lever pivotally mounted on the sleeve and operatively engaged with the strips for flexing said strips and compressing the block on the arm for frictionally securing said arm in adjusted position in the sleeve.
DANIEL BROWN.
