SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 743,365, dated NovemberB, 1903.

To otZZ whom it inc/y concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE WILKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Sharpening Devices, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of .this invention is to provide an improved knife-sharpening device which comprises a frame or holder for a stone and a vertically movable and adjustable bar mounted therein over said stone and between which and the stone the knife-blade is passed in the operation of sharpening the blade,said bar being adjustable in order to regulate the angle at which the edge of the blade is held on the stone, the back edge of the blade bearing upon said bar as the blade is passed over the stone.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a side View of a knife-sharpening device constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2, a central vertical section thereof on the line 2 2 of Figs. 3 and 4; Fig. 3, an end view of the device looking in the direction of the arrow 10 in Fig. 1; Fig. 4, an end view looking in the direction of the arrow a; in Fig. 1 Fig. 5, an endview of a modified form of construction which I employ looking in the direction of the arrow y in Fig. 6; Fig. 6, a side view of said modified form of construction, Fig. 7, an end view of another modified form of construction looking in the direction of the arrow 2 in Fig. 8, and Fig. 8 a longitudinal section on the line 8 8 of Fig. 7
In the practice of my invention, reference being made to Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, I provide a frame or stone-holder which is composed of wire, the said frame consisting of two yoke-shaped end pieces a, which open downwardly and the sides of which are connected by longitudinal bottom members a and the tops of the end members are provided centrally with depending yoke-shaped portions a in which are mounted ahorizontal bar a. The yoke-shaped members a are provided with ratchet-teeth a at one end, and of at the other end, and the bar a is provided at the first-named end with a transverse head a having projections a adapted to enter the ratchet-teeth of saidend and to operate in connection therewith, and pivoted to the opposite end of said bar is a lever 19, having a cam-shaped head b divided into two separate parts or jaws, each of which is provided with a tooth or projection b adapted to operate in connection with the teeth a, and by means of this construction the bar a may be adjusted vertically, and the distance between the same and the stone 0, which is held in the bottom of said frame, may thus be regulated at all times. The operation of the lever b also forces the end members a, which are made of spring material, inwardly, and this causes said end members to grasp and securely hold the stone 0.
In the operation of this device the blade of a knife to be sharpened is passed between the stone 0 and the bar a and the edge thereof is rubbed back and forth over said stone, and in this operation the back edge of said blade bears on the bar a, and in this operation the angle on which the edge of the blade is held on the stone may be regulated, as will be readily understood.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown a modification inwhich the stone 0 is held in a frame consisting of end members 0 having lugs 0 on which the stone rests, and a bolt 0 1s passed through said end members and screw-threaded at one end and provided with a nut 0 The bolt 0 is passed through the end memher 0 below the stone mounted in said end members, and above the stone is a verticallyadjustable bar (1, provided at one end with a screw-threaded extension (1 which passes through a vertical slot in said end member and is provided with a nut d, while the other two of said bars also pass through a slot d in said end member and are provided with the pivoted lever b, which is the same as that shown in Fig. 1, the head thereof being composed of two parts having teeth 6 which operate in connection with corresponding notches or recesses d at the opposite sides of the slot d and by means of this construction the bar (Z may also be vertically adjusted, so as to regulate the width of the space between said bar and the stone 0. There is also a longitudinal space e between the rod 0 and the stone 0, and either side of the stone may be used for sharpening a knife-blade, if desired, and it will be understood that the stone is grasped and held in position by means of the rod 0 the end pieces 0 and the bar 0 together with the lever b, when the latter is in the position shown in Fig. 6.
In Figs. 7and 8 I have shown another modification, in which the stone 0 is held by end pieoesf, having bottom lugs f on which the 'stone rests, and in the end piecesfare provided above said stone with openings or slots f, in which is placed a vertically-movable rod f between which and the stone isa space f and one end of the rod is screw-threaded and provided with a nut j', which serves to clamp the end pieces f together and to hold the stone in place, and it will also be understood that the rod f is vertically adjustable. A stationary bar 9 in this form of construction is also placed between the end piece'sf above the rod f and this red may be connected with said end piece in any desired manner, as will be readily understood, and the operation of sharpening a knife with the forms of construction shown in Figs. 6 and 8 will be the same as with the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A knife-sharpener comprising an oblong stone-holder having end pieces provided with slots or openings, and with teeth at the opposite sides thereof, a bar mounted in said slots or openings, and provided at one end with projections which operate in connection with said teeth and at the opposite end with the pivoted lever having projections which operate in connection with said teeth,'substantially as shown and described.
2. In a knife-sharpener, an oblong stoneholder having end pieces provided with vertically-arranged slots or openings and a vertically-movable rod or bar mounted in said slots or openings and clamping devices connected with the end of said rod or bar whereby said rod or bar may be held at any desired adjustment in said slot-s or openings, substantially as shown and described.
