F. P. GALLlPoLl BLADE HONING AND SHARPENING DEVICE Filedv opt. 19.- 1923 |W/////% ZO Patented Cct. 14, 192f1, A UmTaD STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Application iled4 October 19, 1923. Serial N'o. 669,5 9L- i 35 Fig. 2 is a sectional view Atherethrough T o all whom t may concer/n: 1
Be it known that'I, FRANK- P. GALLIPOLI, -a subject of the King of Italy, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county of Bronx and Sta-teof.l
New York, have invented 'a new and Improved Blade Honing and Sharpening Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. This inventionhasrela-tion to a device for honing and'` sharpening razor vblades and aims as its principal object to provide anextreinely simple, inexpensive and efficient device for this purpose. 1 v I As a further object the invention contemplates a device of the character set forth which greatly facilitates the operation of honing a razor blade and insures the proper positioning and guiding of thev blade during 20 lthe honing operation. 1
With the above recited and otherV objects in view the inventionresides inthe novel construction set forth in the following speciication, particularly pointed out in the ap' 2 5 pended claim and illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments othei than those actually-illustrated herein to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claim is expressed.
In the drawings- Figure 1l is a plan view of a device constructed in accordance with .the invention,
illustrating the use of the device for honing.
taken approximately on the line 2 2 of Figl. f
, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View `taken approximately on the line 3 3 of Fig., 1. Referring to the drawings bycharacters of reference, the device com prises a substanti ally U-shaped resilient or spring member 10 which is provided adjacent the-free endsll and 12 with side flanges 13 which extend yrespectively above and below the ends y11 and 12 to define therebetween receiving. spaces.
A pair lof honing stones 14 are positioned be tween the confronting receiving spaces of the free ends 11 and 12, while a strap section 15 is positioned between. the outerreceiving Yspace defined'by the end l11 and its 4side flanges. The vouter receiving space defined between the end 12 and its side flanges has positioned therein a canvas stropping section 5 5 16. Preferably the ends 11 and 1 2 are aper- \tured as at 17 and asuitable adhesive such as cement 18 is designed to secure the honing stones'14an'd stropping sections 15 and 16 within the receiving spaces, the said adhesive vor cement being adapted to extend through the openings or apertures 1 7. The terminal of the freeend 12 is offset as at 19 to 'overlie a portion of the -forward'end of the stone carried thereby and the extremity of said terminal forms a-shelf 2O which is curved up-.
' wardlv to form a rest and guide for the razor blade B or the supporting -devices` therefor .incase a safety razor is being sharpened. Preferably the forward confronting faces of the stone sections 14are beveled .as at 21 whereby bothsides of the cutting edge of the blade are simultaneously operated upon.
The inherent resiliency of the spring or resilient member 10 .normally effects relative separation of the ends 11 and 12 as illustrated in dotted linesinFig. 2. Iii-practice the 1 blade is positioned to dispose itsc'utting edge between the vstones 14 which are then brought into contact with the opposite sides of the cutting edgeof the blade. The back of the razor or in case of safety razor blades, 'the support therefor, is then allowed to rest upon .the shelf 20. By exerting a .slight pressure to lmaintain the stones in contact with theA blade, the honing may be Areadily accom' honing and sharpening of a razorblade may be effcctually accomplished.
I claim: v A razor blade honing and sharpening device comprising a. resilient U-shaped mem- .ber defining relatively movable arms, a. pairof honingr stones secured respectively to the confronting faces of the free ends of the arms having beveled confronting faces at their forward ends, and a forwardly projecting and upwardly curved extension at the free end of one of the arms constituting a guiding and supporting means for the razor during the honing operation whereby to maintain the ,cutting edges in juxtaposition to the beveled Y faces. v
