This invention relates to an improved pencil Sharpener andkmore particularly a device of this character provided with a detachable blade and so constructed as to permit the removal of a blade when dulled and its replacement by another. n
One object of the invention is the provision of an improved device of this character having the cutting' blade detachably secured to the sharpenerwhereby the cutting blade may be readily removed and replaced by another when desired.
Another object of the invention is the proi vision of an improved device oi' this character which may be cheaply and easily constructed and which is provided with a holder plate of ornamental form adapted in conjunction with the Sharpener to simulate the appearance of `an aeroplane.
A further object of the invention is the provision of novel means fertirnily holding the cutting blade and other parts of the mechanism against movement relative to each other and thereby provide a firm and rigid structure which is ot simple construction and highly e'liicient in use. y
Other objects and advantages of the invention relate to various improved details of construction and arrangement of the parts as will be more fully set forth in the detailed description to follow.

Inthe drawings 1 designates generally the holder member which is formed 'from a single metal plate by bending over the extended side edges 3 in such a manner as to cause these portions to overlie and impartadded rigidity to portions of the main body ot 4the holder 1.
The outer portions 4 yof the inturned'edges 3 are bent into substantially close engagement y with the main body portion of the holder as best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, while i the innermostportions 5 offsaid inturnedy edges are spaced somewhat from the main body yportion ot the holder to form grooves 6 and 7 located upon opposite sides ot the slot 2. Adjacent to one end of the holder 1 are oppositely positioned downwardly extending plates 8 and 9 preferably formed integral n with the main body portion of the holder 1" and out away from the main body yportieri of the holderthroughout a part of their eX- tent randthen bent downwardly to form a channel space k10 orthe'reception of ther cylindrical portion 12 of a conical shell 14. The plates 8 and `9 are bent tofincline inwardly or to converge throughout their extent from the main body portion of the holder,r as shown in Fig. 4,.whereby they frictionally engage and press against the cylindrical portion 12 of the conical shell when the parts are in assembled position :tor a purpose which will be more fully setpt'orth hereinafter. y y
At the opposite end ofthe holder-1 'from the plates 8 andy 9, the width of the holder 1 is reduced as indicated at 15,`and portions of the holder body 1 are bent in the opposite direetion from the plane of the holder from that occupied by the plates 8 and 9 to form jaws 16 and 17 for'holding therebetween an eraser 18. y y
The pencil Sharpener structure comprises a conical-shell 14 having a cylindrical por-` tion 12 extending `from the larger yend thereof, as stated, and which may be formed from a metal sheet rolled into the desired shape and provided with a slot20 extending ina longitudinal direction. relative to the raxis of the conical shell. A projecting plate 23er:- tends outwardly from one side oi' the slot-'2O and is substantially tangential to the conical surface of the Sharpener. p A smaller plate 24 may be provided to extend outwardly from they opposite side of the slot 20. The projecting plates 23 and 24 are adapted to tit within the grooves 6 and 7 respectively, when the parts are in assembled position, whereby the slot 2O registers with the slot 2 in the holder plate, and the cylindrical portion 12 of the sharpener projects between and is rictionally engaged by the converging plates 8 and 9 to hold the cylindrical portion 12 against expansion due to the pressure oit the pencil therein.
lVhen the conical shell 14 is formed from a plate of `flat stock rolled into the desired torn the meeting edges of the material are located at 21, and when a pencil is inserted in the conical shell there is a tendency for the cylindrical portion of the conical shell to spread along the line 21. The plates 8 and 9 converging downwardly from the holder 1 press closely against the opposite sides 'of the cylindrical. portion 12 when the parts are in assembled position, thus tending to hold the cylindrical portion ot the shell against spreading.
The projecting plate 23 is provided with two struck out lugs 25 and 26 which tit within openings 27 and 28 formed in the cutting blade 29 whereby the cutting edge 30 of the cutting blade 29 is held for proper engagement with theendof the pencil through the slot 20 of the conical shell. The groove 6 is so formed as to receive the projecting plate 23 and the cutting blade 29 carried thereby, and the innermost edge 31 of the inturned portion 3 may be bent downwardly to frictionally engage the upper face of the plate 23 and thus firmly bind the cutter in operative position. rlhe plate 2a may be frictionally engaged in a similar manner at 31 to firmly bind the conical shell against sidewise movement in the holder. A depression 32 is formed .in the holder plate 1 adjacent to the end of the slot 2 to provide a space for the pencil point.
It will fbe seen that the grooves 6 and T provide means for receiving the plates 23 and 24 so arranged that the conical shell may be readily slid into position relative to the holder plate 1 so that the cylindrical portion 12 thereof will enter between the plates 8 and 9, and at the same time the cutting blade 29 underlying the plate 23 will be positioned in proper operative relation to the slot 2O and held against movement relative to the slot 2O and plate 23 by the pressure exerted thereon by the portion 5 of the inturned edge Vhile the pressure upon the plate 23 and cutting blade 29 is suliicient to hold the blade against movement relative to the plate, it is not so great as to prevent removal ci the conical shell 14, which may be removed from the holder whenever it is desired to substitute a new blade 29 VJfor one which has become worn. In this way a structure is provided wherein the cutting blade maybe removed and replaced by another whenever a change of blades is desired, and at vthe Sametime the parts are securely held against movement when in assembled position, thus insuring proper operation of the cut-ting blade at all times.
rlhe appearance of the structure is such as to simulate the form and general appearance of an aeroplane, the holder plate 1 being formed to resemble the win gs oi a monoplane, while the conical shell 14 and its cylindrical extension 12 resembles the fuselage, and the narrowed portion 15 and eraser 1S correspond in appearance to the tail portion and rudder oip an aeroplane respectively.

A pencil Sharpener comprising a conical f shell provided with an axially extending slot and having a projecting plate extending substantially tangential to the outer surface of said shell and located adjacent to said slot, a cutting blade iitting against one side of said plate, means on said plate engaging portions of said cutting blade to retain the same in cutting position relative to said slot, a holder for said conical shell comprising guides engaging one end of the conical shell, and'means engaging said plate and cutting blade to retain the conical shell in position relative to i the holder and hold the cutting1 blade detachably against separation from the plate.
