G. E. MENDELL.
RULING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 16. 1918.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GRANT E. MENDELL, OFQHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
RULING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 11, 1919.
Application filed March 16,1918. Serial No. 222,890.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, GRANT E. MENDELL, a cltizen of the United States, residing at Chicago,in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain useful Improvements in Rulin Devices, of which the for rotatably supporting the pens.
It is an additional and equally important object of this invention to provide novel inking pad supports for removable engagement with themain handle in proximity to the disk pens so that the pens will be automatically supplied with ink when the device is in use.
It is a more specific object of this inven tion to provide improved guides on the holder for coiiperation with a ruler when the device is in use; and to provide improved means for remov'ably retaining the pad supports and consequently the pads in position.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low, and the efiiciency high.
Gther improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration a convenient and satisfactory embodiment of the invention. It is to be noted in this. connection that minor changes in the construction and arrange ment of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the principle of operation of the various parts.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which.
Figure 1 is a side elevation thereof;
Fig. 2 is a top plan;
, Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1 in the direction in which the arrows point; and f Fig. 4 is a perspective detail of one of the pad supports.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all ofthe above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings, there is provided a holder-or handle 1 the respective ends of which are bifurcated to provide sockets 2 and spaced resilient arms 3. One of each pair of the arms is provided on one marginal edge with an inwardly e'xtending arcuate slot 4 and is further provided with a guide 5 which extends longitudinally from the outer end of the arm and in alinement with the opposite marginal edge thereof as indicated in Fig. 1 for a. purpose that will.
means have been provided in the present instance consisting of double disk pens 6 and the single disk pen 7. The double disk pen consists of a pair of spaced disks 8 arranged in rigid relation with respect to each other, the outer edges thereof being beveled toward the inner surfaces as indicated by the numeral 9. Supporting trunnions or axles 10 extend from the outer faces of the disks and centrally thereof having washers 11 arranged thereabout preparatory to being journaled in opposed openings 13 in one pair of arms. The disk pen 7 has its outer edge beveled on opposite sides' as indicated by the numeral 14 while trunnions or axles 15 extend from the opposite faces and centrally thereof. Washers 16 are mounted in the sockets 2. Opposed flanges 21 extend inwardly from the outer edges of the opposite sides 19 and serve to facilitate the retention of the pads in the supports. The bottom of each support is flattened as at 22 substantially intermediate'the ends so that the supports will be effectively seated in the sockets. Suitable means for retaining the pads and also the supports in position consist of a screw 23 one end of which is mchored as at 24 to sue of the sides while the opposite end proj ects through the opposite side and is engageable in the adjacens arcuate slot 42. screws are enga ed by knurled nu's which cooperate with che outer face of the adjacent arm in clamping the parks in position, the arrangement being illustrated in Fig. 3.
In use assuming that she parts have been assembled in the manner described ihe handle is engaged in a manner similar to the manner in which an crdinary drawing pen is engaged While both of the guides 5 are adapted i0 alternately cooperate with the ruler (no-t shown) in guiding the rneveinent of the device. Of course the pad'supports will be readily removed by loosening the desired knurled nut. This is done when is is desired to place either another support d pad or a pad "which is saturated With a ineren'b colored ink.
it is to be understood from the foregoing escripiion that number cf dish be arranged integral and in spaced reia' ion is the o her and by Varying the size 01 the device "the usual lines on music sheet may be effectively drawn:
As many changes could be made in a above construction. and many anpareni Widely diLEE-ereir'c enibodirnenis of s b er. could be "Without deuar scene "chereef and it is nde" matter contained in she above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limited sense. It is also to be understood that "the language used in the following claim is intended to cover all the generic and specific features or the invention herein described and all statements or the scope or the invention which as a matter of language mighs be said to fall therebecween.
Ha ing thus fully described this invencion What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters-Patent, is 2- A device 0:? the character described including a holder, spaced arms provided on one end thereof, a rotatably mounted markeleinent between the arms, a guide projecting from one of the arms, an arcuate pad support seated between the arms, a pad mounted in the support and arranged in proximity to the outer edge of the marking element for applying ink thereto a screw carried by one side or" the support and extending through the opposite side and re mcrably engaged in the adjacent arm, and an adjustable element for engagement with the cuter end of the screw for cooperating Wish 'the adjacent arm in retaining the pad and the support in position,
In estiinony whereof afix my signature.
