OLE J'. OLSGN,` HARDIN, MONTANA.' i
TOOL.
Application filed November 5,` 1920. Serial No. 422,034.
To all ifi/iom- Mmzi/ concern.' y y Be it lrnown that l, OLE J. ULsoN, a citizenv of liorway, residingl at Hardin, in the county et Big Horn and Stateo't lli/lontana,
have invented new and useful improvements 1n Tools. of which the 'tollowing is a speeltication. i
My present invention has vreterence to a carpenters tool, and the same 1s 1n the nature oi'a combined rule and scriber.
`ln carrying out the invention' it 1s my purpose to provide a slotted body which has graduations indicating inches and fractions thereof, at one of the edges of the body, said hoc y having at one of its ends'va handle portion. whose inner edge is straight,` arranged ata r1 ght angle with respect to the body, and depending therebelow, while inthe slot of the body there is a shdable Vcarriage having so'that the point of the same will beprojected through'the slot, whereby. a cutting mark may be indicated on a board when the device is drawn over the said board.v the inner straight edgeot the handle portion serving as' a guide which engages one or the edges of the boa1d.and the carriage 'having an indicating iinger i arrangedV directly over the scale,v so that the carriage may be positioned on the body to arrange lthe stylus in a proper position to mark the board at the width ol the slat to be cut therefrom.`
It is also my purpose to produce a carpen ters tool which includes a. measuring rule, a gauge, an-d a scriber, and which is of a simple construction that may be cheaply manufactured and marketed, and which will. be found thoroughly e'llicient for the purpose tor which it is devised. i
The foregoing, and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, be accomplished by a construction,v combination and operative arrangement of parts, such is disclosed by the drawings, which accompany and which form part of this application. vIn the drawingsz-` v Figure 1 is a plan view-showing my tool on a board to be measured or scribed.
novel means for engaging a stylus or pencil Figure 2 is a bottom plan view et the ir n-l Figure 5 is a perspective view of the carriage whichcarries the pencil or stylus.
Figure 6 isan approximately central horizontal sectional view therethrough.
Figure 7 is a perspective view of one ot' the clamping blocks. f
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the improvement is broadly indicated by the numeral 1. lThe improvement includes a fiat `body member' in the nature of a blade 2 that has at one of its ends a depending enlarge mentwhich provides a head 3. The inner face of the head 3 is straight and is arranged at a rightangle. with respect to the outer and straight edge of the blade 2. The inner straight edge L ot the head is designed to be arranged against the outer edge of a board to be measured or scribed. i The outer edge ot' the head 3 is preferably rounded, and the same is also preferably centrally enlarged to 'to-frm the `with a handle portion 6.
` The outer straight edge 7 ot' the blade has its upper corner beveled and the said bevelec portion as well as the straight portion of the blade directly inward thereof has scribed thereon an inch scale 8. The body et the blade is comparatively wide and inward of its said straightedge 7 has spaced longitudinal slots 9 and 10 respectively, the bridging strip `between the slots being indii'ated by the numeral 11. y
The carriage member of the improvement indicated by the numeral 15. The body oi the carriage is in the nature of a block 16' that has its under face provided with a depending lun` 17. The lug is of a length to be snugly received in the slot l0, and to contact with the longitudinal walls provided by the said slot. The iup; has its under 'face ldepressed'to provide a` pocket, and the said lug; has a bolt opening which enters the said pocket. The numeral 2O indicates a binding1 strip torithe carriage. Through this strip Vthere passes bolt 19, the head of the Y received in a depression in the under tace or" the strip 20. *On the bolt there is screwed nut .18 that is received in the referred to poclret in thelug 17 of the calmingA the said bolt passing through the mentioned bolt (mening` in the said carriage and has its outer end engaged by a winged nutQl. l, y
, its upper tace, the bloclclike member 16 of fthe carriage has secured thereto by means 27 a spring strip 29. This strip pro- Glo nature or a pointer and is designed to :be arranged over the scale on the stra-ightedge T oit the blade. rlH'he binding strip Q0, as fdis-` closed in Figure 2 of the drawings is in contacting,` engagement with the'under race 4olf thev strip ll and with 'the body oi the blade inward oil the slot l1), and it will be apparent that vby adjusting' Lthe .vingged nut 2l, a fric-tional .engagement will be exerted beltvveen the strip and the under tace or the blade, thus Jholdingl the carriage adjusted on the blade. A
lLet in the sides or lthe block 1G, and secured thereto bymeans Q-l are sgrinv plates 23. These plates Yproject beyond the 'front 'end ofthe block and are also 'let in the sides of ,cooperating jaw members25,4 the said plates being 'secured tothe respective jaws by me'ansQG. The jaw members have their inner races Aprovided with .registering grooves 25", and .the spring plate 29 is provided with a substantially rectangular openin'g`29" which is arranged over the registering grooves 25" and which is or a greater "length and width than the `grooves. Designed to be passed through the opening .QW/end 'to be received in the groeven jaws .is a carpenters pencil LT. rllhe spring; influenced .jaws E25 are arranged directly overtthe slot 9,so"thait the pointed end or' the pencil or 'scriber 27 Will pass through the said slot -to permit et 'a line being scribed .on a'jboa'rd .32, 'Whenthe head G is arranged in contacting' 'engagement with one of the jaws `of the said ,board and the device is moved l'ongituclinally over the hoard. The
lparticularmanner iu which the carriage is connected to the blade effectively holds the saine against twisting' or accidental longitudinal movement. liy adjusting` 'the thumb nut 2l the carriage can be .readily slid over thefbladeand locked thereon` when the lin- .g'er 29 yis brought opposite a desired scale marl; enI the straight edge 7, sothat meas- .uren'ieiits can bethus made and recorded,
its thenger 29" rprojects a slight distance belen7 the under face or the blade, l `have ,ormedthesaid under `face ,of the said blade at its juncture with the head 3, With de- ,.pending 'enlargements 3l respectively and the outer race of the blade ivitha transversely arranged stripl 3l', which is or a ,thickness corresponding Ato the enlargements 31. The elements 3l and Sljare et a greater 'thickness than thelinger 29, so that when [the blade is arrzuig'ed upon a board as Wide, or'wider than the distance between the head and the outer edge or the blade, the linger ."2'9' vWilllbe 'held out 4or Contact, With such lebend.'` `'As'aanatter 'or' lacaeven when the device is arranged upon a l'ioardfoiE a Width less than that or the blade, as villustrated in Figure l,.the straight under faces `of the enlargements will sustain the under iace or the blade away from contact With the outer race orA the board, and consequently hold lhe binding' ringer 29 'ior the carriage elevatedl above the board.
lllhat l claim is l. In a device for the purpose set forth, a blade having,` a right angularly arranged head depending' from one end thereof, said blade having;` an outer straight edge which is graduated 'to provide an inch scale, said `blade lia-'vine' spaced longitudinal slots therethrough, a carriage having),P a lug received in one of the slots and iii-contacting engagement `with the longitudinal'ivalls provided thereby, a strip on the under. face of `the lug' in contacting' engagement With the Vunder face or the blade, means secured to the strip and passing' through the body or the carriage, adjustable means on said means in contact with the outer 'face oi' the carriage, cooperating' spring' .influenced grooved javvs carried by 'the carriage and having the grooves therein disposed over the second slot in the blade, Vsaid ja'vvs designed to receive .a scriber therebetween to hold the same spaced longitudinal slots inward or the scale,
a, cai iae'e having a lug which is received in t one the slotsn a strip on `the under 'tace or the carriage in contacting engggagement with the carriage and with 'the ivall between the slots connecting` ineens ybetween the strip and c: race or the carriage engaging theconnecting means, springplates on the sides or the carriage ,projecting outward therefrom` cooperatinn' ,grooved jaws secured to the plates and arrai'igred over the second` slot in the blade, a springe; plate secured to lthe upper race of the blade, receivingtherethrough the cofinectingg; means for the strip and engaged by the adjus n means therefor, said last mentioned spr plate having aslot in 'a line 'with the gre/oyes in th'ejavrsandhaving its outer end bent at a downward angle and `extended to provide a pointer lwhich is arranged over the scale niai'ls of the blade, and said blade hayinn its inner and its outer i ends provided with depending' enlargements,
