Be it known that I, JOHN Somurz, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fort Worth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Sharpener for Safety-Razor Blades, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the sharpening or stropping device consists of a pair of slidably connected members 10 and 11 each of which includes an upper or lower wall 12 and parallel right angularly disposed side flanges 13, the terminals of which are bent to produce a dovetailed bead 14. The dovetail beads of the a section 10 are adapted to receive the dovetail beads of the section 11 whereby said members 10 and 11 are connected for relative longitudinal sliding movements. Each of the members are provided on the inner surface of their walls 12 with a blade sharpening element 15 consisting of a' block or base 1.6 and outer covering consisting of parallel diagonally disposed strips 17 preferably of leather. The-forward and rear extremities of the blocks 16 are chamfered or down-turned as at 18 for a purpose to be'h'ereafter set forth. Each of the mem-- bars 10' and His further provided with parallel rack bars 19 disposed interiorly at opposite sides of their walls 12 at the juncture of the side flanges 13 therewith, said rackbars being. spaced from the side'edges of the sharpening elements 13 to produce therebetween a guide groove 20. The member 11 is provided adjacent its opposite ends with an upstanding end flange 21 while the wall 12' of the member 10 is cut away adjacent one extremity to provide a recess too side flanges 24 which embrace the extremities of the side flanges 13 while the 'opposite extremity of the wall 12 is provided with an end flange 21. The cover plate 22 is provided with rack bar sections 25 which are designed to align with the rack bars 19 when the same is in closed position. The opposite extremities of the walls 12 of the member 11 are provided with spaced parallel inclined portions 26 disposed in alignment with the grooves 20 defined by the rack bars and the opposite side edges of the blocks 16. ,The said inclined portions 26 are inclined downward and inwardly from the end flanges 21 at a point above the inner surface of the wall 12 and terminate adjacent the outer down-turned ends of the blocks 16 at a point below the inner surface of the walls 12 where they communicate with an opening 27 through the wall 12. The section 10, is provided with similarly'inclined portions 28 adjacent one extremity of its wall 12, said inclined portions being formed in the cover plate 22 at its opposite extremity. The members 10 and 11 are each provided with manipulatinghandles consisting of 'transverselynrranged flexible yokcs 29 secured attheir opposite extremities to the medial portiom thereof to receive the hands oi": the operator."
A blade carrying element is adapted to be operatively associated with the members 10 and 11 which consists of a pair of relatively separable shanks or bars 30-and 31 each of which is provided at one ex-' tremity with a substantially diamond shaped head'32 which head is provided with a spaced receiving opening 33 designed to receive and accommodate the free extremity of the shank of the other member of the blade carrying element. The shank 31 is provided with longitudinally spaced pins 34 and the shank 30 with complementary longitudinally spaced receiving slots 35 for the accommodation of the pins 34:. Each head 32 is provided with an outwardly project- -ing trunnion 36 upon which a pinion 37:

The specific method of constructing and amembling the shanks or bars 30 or 31with the heads 32, as illustrated in Figs.- 8, 9, 10 and 11, consists in slitting one extremity of the bar 30 or 31 from its outer end as at 41 to provide parallel outer tongues 42 and an intermediate tongue 43, which intermediate tongue is rounded to provide the trunnion 36. The head 32 is provided with a slot 44 parallel to the opening or slot 33. The
slitted extremity is then inserted through the opening 44 and a tongue 45 is upstruck from the shank in spaced relation to the inner terminals of the slots 41. The tongues ht angle to project the same in the opposite direction to the tongue 45 whereby the same will overlie and cover the outer end of the opening 33. The trunnion 36 is then bent to offset the it concentrically from the outer end of the head.
In Fig. 12 a modified form of blade carrying element is illustrated for use in connection with a single edged blade C provided with a reinforcing rib D, in which instance the shank 46 is recessed as at 47 to accommodate the reinforcing rib D while the other shank 48 is fiat.

A stropping device for safety razor blades comprising a pair of supporting members having stropping elements in opposed relation, a connection between said members for maintaining the same in spaced parallel relation and for permitting of relative Ion-- gitudinal sliding movements thereof, an oscillatory carria e removably positioned between said mem rs, interengapreable means on the carriage and on said supporting members for causing a reciprocable movement of the members in opposite directions upon manipulation of the device, means on the carriage for detachably associating a blade therewith, heads on the carriage engageable with the supporting members for limiting the oscillation of said carriage whereby to effect the forcible engagement of the sides of. the cutting edges of the blade with the stropping aces, means at the opposite ends of the supporting members, and means on the carria e heads engageable therewith at the opposite end of each stroke of the device for oscillating thecarriage.
2. A stropping device for safety razor blades comprlsing a pair ofstropping ele ments, means for maintainingthe same in spaced parallel relation and for permitting of limited relative longitudinalmovements thereof, an oscillatory blade supporting carriage removably disposed between said elements, i'nterengageable means on the carriage and on said elements for effecting a reciprocable movement of the elements in o posite directions upon manipulation of t e device, means on the carriage for limiting the oscillation of the same in opposite directions and for disposingthe sides of the cutting edges of the blade at an angle to and in the path of movement of the stropping elements, and interengageable means on the carriage and the opposite ends of the sharpening element adapted to coact at the end of. each stroke of the device for oscillating the carriage to dispose the blade at an opposite angle. p

A strapping device for safety razor blades including a, pair of members connected for limited relative longitudinal movement in opposite directions, a strapping element carried by each member, the stropping faces thereof being in spaced opposed relai reat one extremity of each shank, two edges of which are designed to slidably engage the members to dispose the blade at an inclination to the path of travel of the stropping elements, and. rotary pinions at opposite sides of the blade carrier for respective engagement with the rack bars whereby the blade and blade carrier are maintained against rocking movement during the en gagement and movement of the stro ping faces with the cutting edges of the bla e.
