Description

Oct. l1, 1932. J. D. LANGDON RAZOR BLADE SHARPENER Filed July 14, 1928 Fl E- E..
Streuung Patented Oct. ll, 1932 UNITED STATES "KPATENToI-FICE JESSE D. LANGDON, E Los ANGELES, CALIF01minfv RAZOR BLADE SHARPENER Application led July 14,
The present invention relates to razor blade Sharpeners and aims to 'provide a novel and improved device of that kind by means of which the razor blade may be conveniently I sharpened by inserting and withdrawing the blade.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the J" construction and arrangement of parts, as
hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
' The invention is illustrated in the accompanyingdrawing, wherein- Figure l is a plan view of a shaving kit,
with the cover in open position, showing the blade Sharpener.
if; Fig. 2 is a cross section on-the line 2 2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. l of the blade Sharpener and blade holder.
Fig.- 4 is a plan view of the blade holder. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the blade holder showing same partly opened. The kit, which is more fully described 1n my copending application Serial No. 292,788, led even date herewith, includes a case or "1 box l0 having a hinged cover or top 1l, and a U-shaped or horseshoe magnet 16 is disposed within the case. Y
The blade Sharpener 17 comprises two plates 26 of suitable sheet metal disposed toa gether and secured together in any Suitable manner. As shown, opposite edges of the plates 26 are bent back around the companion fedges, as at 27, for securing said plates together. The plates have the portions 28 offset #i2 awa-y from one another and arranged vertically with the SharpenerV 17 disposed in the case as Shown. The offsets 28 provide pockets in which are disposed for rotation the pairs of rollers 29 composed of carborundum or any other suitable abrasive material.
There are two pairs of abrasive rollers 29 for sharpening'the opposite edges of a razor blade inserted into the Sharpener, and said pairs of rollers are so spaced apart that .50 the edges of theblades pass directly between f between the 192s. Serin No. 292,787.
The'plates 26 are spaced apart pairs of rollers 29 in order to receive the razor blade 25, thus providing a guide forpthe blade when introduced into the Sharpener.
the rollers.
between the offsets 28 with portions 31 oli'set away Afrom one another and providing a guide to receive Said blade holder for conveniently inserting and withdrawing the blade.
The blade holder 30 comprises the elongated members or plates 32 and 33 forholding the blade 25 between them, said members being narrower in width than the blade so that the edge portions of the blade project` i beyondjthe edges of lsaid members. The
'members 32l and 33 are provided at one end grip for the thumb to conveniently swing In order to accommodate the 1 blade holder 30, the plates'26 are provided the member' 33 away yfrom the member 32 I and blade 25', as seen in Fig. l.
Lugs 38 are 'struck from the member 32 to engage through the apertures 39 in the blade 25, for properly positioning said blade withinthe blade holder, and the member 33 has apertures 40 to receive the lugs 38 when the members 32 and 33 are swung together. The member 33 is slightly shorter than the mem ber 32, in order that when the corresponding end of the member 32 and blade 25 are held between the thumb and first finger of kone hand, as seen in Fig. 5, the opposite end of the holder may be held between the thumb and rst linger of the other hand, for conveniently swinging the member 33 open, the
first named thumb being beyond the end of the member 33, and the Second named thumb being moved under pressure in engagement with the portion 37, to swing the member 33 away from the blade.
then be readily removed and replaced.
The blade 25 may When a blade is disposed in the blade holder 30, the blade may be readily introduced into the sharpener 17, the holder 30 moving downwardly in the o'sets 31 so as to guide the blade holder and blade in the Sharpener. The edges of the blade are therefore moved longitudinally between Athe abrasive rollers 29 in order to sharpen the'blade. Y, The rollers 29 will also hollow-grind the edge portions of the blade because the rollers present convex surfaces to the blade.- The blade may be reciprocated while in the Sharpener, but it may usually be sufficient to slide the blade with the blade holder into the Sharpener and 5. then withdraw the blade.
The- 'Sharpener 17 being located at the terffininals of the magnet 16. will also result in the magnetic flux acting on the edge portions of the; blade 25 while it is inthe Sharpener.
vThe rollers 29 may also rotate in order to present the peripheral surface of the rollers vreplaced when worn-out. s
