Patented Mar. 30, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DEVICE FOR SHARPENING AND STROPPING CUTTING IMPLEMENTS 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a device for sharpening and stropping razor blades and other cutting implements, and has for the primary object the provision of a device of this character which comprises in a single unit a sharpening or honing plate and a stropping or finishing plate both having a concaved blade or implement engaging face and a mounting or holder for said plate and provides a device which may be conveniently held in one hand, while the other hand or a finger thereof is employed to move a blade or implement over either of said plates for first sharpening the blade or implement and then providing thereto a keen cutting edge.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a device for sharpening and stropping cutting implements and constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the mounting or holder with the sharpening and holding plates removed therefrom.
Figure 3 is a perspective view illustrating one of the plates.
Figure 4 is a. longitudinal sectional view showing the plates mounted to the holder or mounting.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view illustrating the device.
Figure 6 is a plan view showing the blank from which the holder or mounting is made.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral I indicates a mounting or frame of substantially rectangular shape and includes side portions 2 4.0 and end portions 3. The portions 2 and 3 are of integral construction and are made from a blank, as shown in Figure 6. The blank is of any suitable metallic material.
Each side portion 2 is decreased in width from its ends towards its intermediate portion and integral with opposite edges thereof are flanges 4, each arcuately curved to form a seat. The end portions 3 project beyond the seats 4 and are cut away to form spaced tongues 5 and also are rolled upon themselves to form headings or flanges 6. Each beading or flange 6 lies between a pair of the extensions 5. Sharpening and honing plates each of the same construction but of different materials are designated generally by the character I and are curved to conform to the contour of the seats 4 and have their ends 5 cut away to form extensions 8 to fit under the flanges 6. The extensions 5 are then bent in the direction of the seats to abut the ends of the extensions 8 and thereby prevent the plates 1 from shifting laterally of the seats, said plates 10 being prevented from shifting endwise of the seats by the flanges 6. The plates 1 being curved to conform to the seats 4 present to said plates concaved implement engaging faces. One of the plates is constructed of a material for sharpening 15 purposes while the other plate is constructed of material for finishing purposes, that is, one of the plates is for sharpening or honing an implement and the other. plate is for the purpose of stropping the implement to provide a keen cutting edge thereto.
The end portions are cut away to form slots 9 which may be employed as finger grips to permit a person to obtain a firm grip upon the holder or frame.
The ends of the blankafter said blank has been bent to form the frame are joined together, as shown at Ill.
The side portions 2 have secured to their outer faces strips ll made of any suitable material 30 and preferably chamois on which a blade or other cutting implement may be wiped. The strips H conform to the contour of the side portions to which they are applied.
Having described the invention, I claim: 7
A device for sharpening and stropping cutting implements comprising a frame, curved seats formed on said frame and arranged in pairs with the pairs of seats arranged on opposite sides of the frame, curved sharpening and stropping plates supported by seats and each provided with a concaved implement engaging face, flanges formed on said frame, extensions formed on said flanges, said plates being cut away to form extensions to fit under the flanges, said first-named extensions adapted to be bent to engage the opposite sides of the second-named extensions cooperating with the flanges in retaining the plates in engagement with the seats.
