Application May 2, 1930, Serial NO. 449,143 19 cizims. (C1. 80-93) My invention relates to thin razor blades and, more particularly, to the type of blades used in safety razors.
It is well known that, in handling a safety razor blade or while shaving, cuts are occasionally infiicted by the sharp corners of the cutting edge coming in contact with the skin of the operator. To prevent such injury, it has always been considered desirable to provide a blade in which the cutting edge would be sharp only along its operating portion, the' corners being unground and blunt. I-Iowever, because of production difficulties in processing limited bevel areas, such sectionally sharpened edges, although highly desirable, have heretofore been considered to be impractical from a manufacturing stan-dpoint.
The main object of my invention is to produce a Safety razor blade, with 'sectionally sharpened cutting edges, which can be machined without greatly departing from conventional manufacturing methods and apparatus. Other objects will become apparent from the detailed specification which follows.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is .a plan view of a safety razor blade embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a parti-al sectional view of a device for sharpening a blade such as is shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view of a blade similar to that shown in Figure 1, but having a single cutting edge.
Figures 4, 5, and 6 are plan views of modifications of my invention. Figure '7 is a similar view of a further modification wherein portions of sharp edges alternate with portions of blunt edges.
Figure 8 is a plan view of a blade of similar characteristics but having four, instead of two, cutting edges.
Referring to the figures in detail, is a blade which has the general outline of a standard safety razor blade, provided with apertures 2 (Figs. 1, 4, 6), or with a reinforced back 3 (Figs. 3, 7, according to the type of razor used. The blade has slits 4, preferably at right angles to the (beveled) cutting edge 5, which end in round perforations 6. The slits start at the periphery of the blade. The blade may be plane or curved. In the first case, the cutting edge, is in the plane of the blade. In the second case, it is fiush with the surface of the blade.
The slits 4 need not be at right angles to the cutting edge, as in Figure 1, but may be at an acute or an obtuse angle thereto, as shown in Figures 5, 6, and 8; nor need these slits be formed by parallel or even straight lines, other shapes of the slits being equally effective. One of such other forms is illustrated in Figure 4. In this case, the perforations 6 may be dispensed with.
My invention applies to blades of any outline and with any number of cutting edges, Fgure 8 being shown to illustrate this feature.
All the edges of the blade other than the cutting edge or edges are blunt. The process of sharpening cutting edges between blunt portions is illustrated in Figure 2. The blade I is firmly held between suitable supports l and 8, the latter having arms 9 which exten-d only under the blunt portions of the blade, i. e. portions external to the slits thereby raising these portions out of contact with the grinding wheel I [I (only partially shown), while the cutting edge 5 of the blade is in contact with the wheel |0. By this simple arrangement, the blade can be sectionally ground and sharpened without maternally changing standard methods and apparatus.
The unground portions of the blade are naturally blunt, but, if it is desired to make them still blunter, the metal blank from which the blade is stamped out may be bent upon itself along the outer edge.
I-Iaving fully described my invention, and it being understood that the specific embodiments thereof described and illustrated herein merely serve to illustrate the invention and admit of many variations without affecting the principle and scope of the invention, and that I do not limit myself to such specific embodiments as shown herein, I claim:
1. A razor blade having a cutting edge along a portion of its periphery and slits transverse to said cutting edge ending at said periphery, said slits being spaced from the corners of said blade.
2. A razor blade having a cutting edge along a portion of its periphery and slits at right angles to said cutting edge ending at said periphery, said slits being spaced from the corners of said blade.
3. A razor blade having a cutting edge along a portion of its periphery, said blade being provided with holes and slits from said holes to said periphery spaced from the corners of said blade.
4. A razor blade having a cutting edge along a portion of its periphery, said blade being provided with holes and slits from said holes to said periphery at right angles to said cutting edge.
5. A razor blade having a cutting edge along a portion of its periphery intermediate its ends,
said blade ends being normally fiush with the blade portion Containing said Cutting edge, but adapted to be flexed relatively thereto.
6. A blade provided with a sha-ving edge and slits extending inwardly from the shaving edge adjacent the opposite sides of the blade, said slits serving to define impact or shock absorbing areas.
7. A blade defined by a substantially straight shaving edge along one end and side walls at an angle thereto to provide Corner portions at each end of the shaving edge, said corner portions being subject to distortion independently of the portion of the shaving edge between the corner portions.
8. A razor blade having slits transverse to the Cutting edge or edges and spaced from the Corners of the blade, each portion of the blade Containing a Cutting edge being intermediate va pair of said slits and fiush with the surface of the blade, and the extensions of said Cutting edge or edges beyond said slits being blunt.
9. A razor blade having one or more Cutting edges and slits at the ends of each Cutting edge at right angles thereto and spaced from the Corners of the blade, the extensions of said cutting edge or edges beyond said slits being blunt.
10. An oblong razor blade adapted to be flexed about its longitudinal axis and having a transverse slit near each one of its longitudinal ends, and a Cutting edge intermediate said slits, the extensions of said Cutting edge beyond said slits being blunt.
11. A resilient razor blade having a peripheral Cutting edge intermediate its ends, said blade ends being normally flush with the portion of the blade Containing said Cutting edge, but adapted to be fiexed relatively thereto.
12. A resilient plane razor blade having a peripheral Cutting edge intermediate its ends, said blade ends being normally in the plane of the blade portion Containing said Cutting edge, but adapted to be flexed relatively thereto.
13. A Safety razorV blade having a peripheral Cutting edge intermediate its ends and flexible about a line parallel to said Cutting edge, said blade ends, normally flush With the surface defined by the portion of the blade Containing sald Cutting edge, being fiexible independently of said Cutting edge Containing portion.
14. A plane safety razor blade having a peripheral Cutting edge intermediate its ends and flexible about a line parallel to said Cutting edge, said blade ends, normally lying in the plane defined by the portion of the blade Containing said Cutting edge, being flexible independently of said Cutting edge containing portion.
15. A razor blade having a peripheral Cutting edge intermediate its ends and slits separating said Cutting edge from said blade ends.
16. A razor blade having a peripheral Cutting edge intermediate its ends, and slits transverse to said Cutting edge separating said Cutting edge from said blade ends.
17. A razor blade having a peripheral Cutting edge intermediate its ends, and slits at right angles to said Cutting edge separating said Cutting edge from said blade ends.
18. A razor blade having blunt Corners, a cutting edge intermediate its ends, and slits separating said Cutting edge from said blunt Corners.
19. A razor blade having blunt Corners, a peripheral Cutting edge intermediate said Corners,
and transverse slits separating said Cutting edge from said Corners.
