(Cl. 51-187) This invention relates to a hone and more particularly to a hone for sharpening shears and it consists in the constructions, arrangements and combinations herein described and claimed.

It is a particular object of the invention to provide a hone in'which the stropping surface is detachably secured to the strop body permitting interchange of stropping surfaces of varying degrees of coarseness as well as to permit replacement of a worn hone surface.

It is a still further object of the invention to provide a hone body of substantial height upon the upper planiform face of which there is secured a stropping surface held in position by respective fastening means, the latter projecting above the stropping surface and functioning to limit the movement of the blade of the shears during the honing operation; and by virtue of the height of the hone body, the blade not being honed will be at such elevation as to clear the fingers of a user when honing the shears.

Additional objects, advantages and features of invention will be apparent from the following description considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein,

There is illustrated a hone body 10 of substantial height and of elongated form, which may be constructed from wood or metal.

The hone body comprises a flat base 11 and formed integrally therewith is a strop supporting surface 12 of a length greater than the base to provide projections 13 beyond respective ends of the base. Each projection 13 is formed with an opening 14 extending therethrough for reception of a fastening means for securing the strop surface, as will be explained.

A sheet of card board 15 of the same dimensions as the surface 12 is employed to provide resilience for an abrasive strip 16 which likewise is of the same dimensions as the surface 12. The sheet 15 may be glued to the surface 12 if desired, and the sheet 15, as well as the abrasive strip 16 are provided with openings 17 positioned so as to align with respective openings 14 of the hone body.

* United States Patent With the sheet 15 and abrasive strip 16 in position upon the surface 12, a washer 18 is laid upon the strip 16, the opening of which is aligned with the openings 14 and 17. A bolt 19 is passed through the aligned openlugs and a wing nut 20 is engaged upon the projecting threaded end of the bolt and thus secure the abrasive strip 16 to the body of the hone.

From the foregoing, it will be seen that the abrasive strip 16 may be readily removed from the hone body by merely removing the wing nuts 20 and replaced by a new abrasive strip.

It will be noted that the washers so as to project above the abrasive strip 16 and in use of the strop, the blade being honed, is pulled across the abrasive strip with the cutting edge, so that the rear edge of the blade will strike the washers thus limiting further movement of the blade.

While I have shown and described a preferred form of the hone, this is by way of illustration, and I consider as my own all such modifications in construction as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A scissor hone comprising an elongated base member of substantial height and having a planiform upper face, a resilient pad on said face, an emery sheet on said resilient pad, fastening means for securing respective ends of said pad and emery sheet to said base member, and each of said fastening means including raised portions projecting above said emery sheet functioning as stops for limiting movement of the blade of a pair of shears during honing.

A scissor hone comprising an elongated base mem- 18 are of a thickness her having a planiform strop supporting surface of a length greater than said base member to provide a projecting member at each end of the base member, an opening formed in each projecting member, a resilient pad on said strop supporting surface, an emery sheet on said resilient pad, said pad and emery sheet being provided with openings aligned with respective openings in said projections, a washer on the emery sheet aligned with the openings in said emery sheet, a bolt extended through the washer and the opening of said emery sheet, resilient pad and said projecting members, the head of said bolt and the washer projecting above the emery sheet and a Wing nut secured to the threaded end of the bolt.
