Description

L. M. SIMONS ON COMBINATION HOLDER AND SHARPENER FOR KITCHEN KNIVES Filed Nov. 7, 1946 INVENTOR LAWRENCE M. Swomsozv 4&6:
Patented Aug. 12, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COMBINATION HOLDER AND SHARPENER FOR KITCHEN KNIVES 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a combination holder and sharpener for kitchen knives.
An object of the invention is to provide a holder for kitchen knives having sharpening means therein, and means for forcing the knife into engagement with said sharpening means within said holder.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combined holder and sharpener which is safe to use, simple in construction and can be inexpensively manufactured.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view partly in section of an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is the same, showing a knife in position to be sharpened;
Figure 3 is a front elevational view partly in section and Figure 4 is a plan view of the device.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the reference numeral Ill designates the back portion or rear wall of the holder which is provided with apertured curved marginal ends ll whereby the holder may be secured to a suitable support.
Formed integral with the rear wall I l is a boxlike body l2 having a top I 3, side walls l4 and a front wall [5 and the lower marginal edges l6 are inclined downwardly from the lower marginal edge of the front Wall I5.
Secured to the inner surface of the rear wall l0, adjacent the top [3, is a rotary disc knife sharpener I1, and any suitable sort of fastening means I8 may be used for the securing thereof. The sharpener is of the conventional type whereby a knife blade drawn through the meshing discs will be sharpened, but any type of sharpener may be used, within the scope of the invention.
The top I3 is provided with three parallel relatively spaced slots l 9, 20 and 2|, which are parallel to the sides I4, and slot 20 is adapted to receive a knife blade to be sharpened while the other slots will receive the blades of knives for the holding thereof, before or after sharpening. The handle of the knife rests on the upper surface of the top 13 to support the knives within the holder.
Secured to the inner surface of the front wall I5, in alinement with the slot 20 by suitable fastening means 22 is a curved spring 23, which extends upwardly beyond the slot 20, so that a knife blade can be inserted into slot 20 intermediate the spring and the sharpener.
The spring 23 bearing against the back edge of the blade will force the blade into engagement with the sharpener for the sharpening thereof.
The knife can then be sharpened without the necessity of pressing the blade against the sharpener manually, and being within the holder, the user thereof is protected from being cut by the knife during the sharpening operation. As previously stated, the center slot is used when a knife is to be sharpened, and the outer slots are only used for holding the knives within the holder.
It is believed that the construction and operation of the device will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and it is to be understood that changes in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, provided they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A device of the character described, comprising a back portion, a box-like body having a top, side and front walls and an open bottom formed integral with said back portion, a plurality of slots in the tOp of said body parallel to each other and to the side walls of the body, and relatively spaced from each other and from the side walls of the body, a sharpening means secured to the inner surface of the back portion adjacent the top of the body and in alinement with one of said slots and a spring means secured to the inner surface of the front wall of said body in alinement with and extending upwardly out of one of the slots to force a knife inserted in said slot into engagement With said sharpener.
