Description

Sept. 26, 1933. C E, PETERSON 1,928,028
COMBINED PARING KNIFE AND SPOT GOUGE Filed April 29, 1931 Patented Sept. 26, 1933 f UNITED STATES COMBINED PRING GOUGE KNIFE AND sro'rv Conrad E. Peterson, Malden, Mass.
Application April 29, 1931. Serial No.` 533,623
1 Claim.
My invention relates to paring knives and par- Y ticularly to the class in which discarded` razor blades supported in a handle, are utilized as a cutting element.
The object of my invention i's to .provide a paring knife of the character described in which the razor blade is held firmly, is curved on its cutting edge to approximate the contour of the fruit or vegetable to be pared, and may be replaced With facility.
One important feature of my invention is the character of the holder and the means for clamping the blade.
Another important feature is the arrangement of a gouge for removing spots or the eyes of potatoes. a
Such a gouge is essential for a device ofl this character, and is commonly formed as an exten-A sion axially of the handle.r
When so disposed, there is a liability when not used carefully, for the gouge to slip when used, and injure the user.
I therefore provide such a gouge on the back side of my holder, and the user by reversing the knife can operate it with safety and greater facility.
My invention consists in the novel character of the holder, and in the novel manner by which the blade isv securely held therein. y
In the specifications and claim and the drawing forming a part thereof I have described and illustrated a preferred form of my invention.
In the drawing,
Fig. 1 is a plan View of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on 2-2 Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on 3-3 Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on 4-4 Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing:
I utilize a discarded safety razor blade 10 of a type in popular use, as the cutting Aelement of my invention.
The holder for this blade comprises a base element 11, a cover 12 and a handle 13. The element 11 and the cover 12 are each formed arcuate axially, with tapered half lshanks 14 and 15 respectively, and the handle is provided with a corresponding socket 16. The base element v11 is formed atrits opposite end with an ear 17 through which extends an opening adapted to permit the passage of a hooked portion 18 formed on the opposite end of the cover 12. Formed on the base element 11 is a tongue 19 bent downwardly from the convex surface, and tapered, for a reason to be presently decided, and on either side of the tongue and bent downwardly are the lips 20-21.
The particular form ofv blade used is formed on each end with narrowed extensions 22 and the lips 20-21 are formed with4 projections 23 on either end of the lips, -`forming sockets in which theblade ends are seated. Both the base element and the cover are curved axially, and when the blade is seated, the hooked portion 18 of the cover 12 is inserted into the opening in the ear 17 as shown m .broken lines Fig. 2, the body of the cover engages the blade andY bends it to conform with the contour of the cover.
The tongue 19, is tapered to an edge 24, and this edge engages the opposite side of the blade, permitting a slot-like opening between the blade edge, and the frame member 25 ofthe base .element. The cover is similarly tapered laterally to an edge 26 and the opposite side 27 is extended to cover'the opposite edge of the blade, serving as a protection against accidental cutting 'of the hand. v
As the cover is closed, the shank ends of the base element and the cover, are socketed in the handle, and the bladey is rmly held as the device is used.
The curvature of the blade approximates the surface of the article to be pared, such as potatoes, apples and the like, and to provide for the removal of potato eyes, or spots, I provide a projection 28-on the side of the base element, bent downwardly and sharpened, to form a gouge. As
the device is held it may .be rotated axiallyto bring either blade or gouge into operative position for paring the fruit or vegetable.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In a paring knife and spot gouge in combination with a removable razor blade, a supporting element therefor of curved contour longitudinally and formed lwith raised portions onwhich the blade may be supported near its ends; abutments on said raised portions forming sockets for said blade ends; a tongue depressed from the supporting element to engage the blade near one cutting edge and to form a slot like opening in the element through which parings may pass;
an ear on one end of the holder provided with an opening` therethrough; a shank portion of arcuate section extending from the other end of the element and tapering in its length; va cover of curved contour longitudinally, having an extension adapted to be hooked into 'the opening I and a shank portion of arcuate section extending from the other end and tapering in its length,
